Watch how to take those out of date painted pianos and make them new 👏🏽 #diy #furniture

2025/1/14 Edited to

... Read moreI remember staring at my old piano, a beautiful but terribly dated piece that just didn't fit my home's decor anymore. It felt like such a huge project, but I was determined to give it a new lease on life. That's when I decided to try a DIY piano upcycle using chalk paint! I’d seen so many amazing furniture flips online, and I thought, why not my piano? The thought of painting such a large, intricate piece was daunting at first. "How to paint a piano?" was the question buzzing in my head. But after some research, I realized chalk paint was the perfect solution. The biggest advantage? No heavy sanding required! For someone like me who isn't a professional, that was a game-changer. Chalk paint adheres beautifully to almost any surface, which made the prep work much simpler. Here's a breakdown of how I transformed my piano, hoping it helps you with your own project: First, preparation is key. Even though chalk paint doesn't require sanding, you still need a clean surface. I thoroughly cleaned my piano, wiping away years of dust and grime with a mild degreaser. I also used painter's tape to protect any parts I didn't want painted, like the keys, pedals, and hinges. This step really makes a difference in the final look. Next, it was time for the chalk paint application. I chose a lovely muted shade that complemented my living room. I learned quickly that thin, even coats are best. I applied two to three thin coats, allowing each to dry completely in between. Don't rush this part! A consistent, smooth finish comes from patience. I found using a good quality brush designed for chalk paint really helped minimize brush strokes. After the paint dried, I considered distressing it slightly for a vintage look, which is popular with chalk paint projects. I lightly sanded some edges to reveal a hint of the original wood underneath, but this is totally optional! I loved how it added character. The most crucial step, especially for a high-traffic piece like a piano, is sealing. Chalk paint needs a topcoat to protect it from scuffs and moisture. I opted for a clear wax, applying it with a soft cloth in circular motions and then buffing it to a smooth sheen. You could also use a polycrylic sealer for extra durability, especially on the top surface where things might be placed. This step truly locks in your hard work and gives the piano a beautiful, lasting finish. Beyond just painting, I thought about the overall piano upcycle. I cleaned and polished the brass pedals, and even considered updating the piano bench with a new fabric cushion. These small details can really elevate the entire piece. It’s not just about the paint; it’s about reimagining the piece for its new life in your home. Looking back, my biggest tip would be to not be afraid to start! It seems like a big task, but breaking it down into smaller steps makes it manageable. And don't worry about perfection; the charm of a DIY painted piano often lies in its unique, handcrafted feel. My "out of date painted piano" is now a stunning focal point, and I couldn't be prouder of this furniture flip!

A lot of people think that in order to paint furniture you have to completely sand off the old finish. Fortunately, that’s not the case! All you need to do is rough up the surface enough for your paint to stick to it. Go over the whole piece with 120 grit sandpaper and you will be good to go!
