Laundry rules I break (and still get good results)

I started letting go of a lot of laundry “rules” after my son was born… and honestly, I have no idea why I ever followed them in the first place. Here’s what I don’t do anymore:

❌ Separate lights & darks

Unless I’m washing bright whites, I don’t bother separating anything. I haven’t had issues, and it cuts down on the number of loads I have to do - saving time, energy, and money.

❌ Fold drawer clothes

If it’s going in a drawer, it’s not getting folded 😂 Pajamas, gym shorts, underwear—they all get tossed in. No one sees them, so why waste the time?

❌ Use dryer sheets

I stopped buying them a while ago and haven’t noticed a difference. We switched to fragrance-free detergent when I was pregnant, and I’ve stuck with it - so much better for hormones and sensitive skin. If I want a little extra freshness, I just add a few drops of peppermint essential oil to the dryer. Works like a charm and totally non-toxic!

... Read moreMany traditional laundry practices, such as separating lights and darks or always folding clothes before storing, stem from habits rather than necessary scientific reasons. Recent insights show that modern detergents and washing machines have improved to a point where some of these rules can be bent without compromising clothing care. For example, not separating lights and darks in every load (except for bright whites) reduces the number of loads, thus saving significant time, water, and energy. This approach is particularly beneficial for busy households managing multiple loads daily. However, it is important to still monitor for color bleeding when washing new or vibrant dark clothing to avoid staining lighter items. When it comes to folding clothes destined for drawers, functionality often outweighs aesthetics, especially for items like pajamas, gym shorts, and underwear. Allowing these to be simply tossed into drawers can cut down on folding time and still maintain organization if drawer dividers or bins are used. Regarding dryer sheets, many people are transitioning to non-toxic laundry products to protect sensitive skin and avoid chemical fragrances. Alternatives such as adding a few drops of peppermint essential oil to wool dryer balls can offer a fresh scent naturally and safely while reducing static cling. This switch supports healthier skin, especially important during pregnancy or for individuals with hormone sensitivities. Ultimately, adapting laundry routines to fit personal lifestyle needs, embracing energy-saving methods, and utilizing nontoxic products can enhance both convenience and health outcomes. This flexible approach to laundry challenges outdated norms and encourages sustainable household practices that align with modern living demands.

I don’t separate either. The only thing I separate is my sheets(because they are bulky lol) and me and my daughter in law own a cleaning company so we separate our cleaning rags from everything else.

So, on Sunday, I done something I've never done since doing laundry, and that's wash it all together. I am so anal about my laundry, and I was like, ya know, I have so much laundry, here goes. And I was really unbothered by it, and dried all my clothes on low setting. 😃
