Honestly, I probably would have rated A Reign of Rose higher if it wasn’t for the distraction of the TikTok ban and Onyx Storm release.
In this story, the kingdoms/territories are all named after Gemstones - Onyx, Amber, Peridot, etc. Our main character Arwen lives in Amber with her mother and sister. Their brother is off fighting in the war against the Onyx kingdom. That is until he returns home early with a bag of stolen coin in hand. Now harboring a deserter and a thief, Arwen and her family find themselves on the run. Arwen ends up getting captured by the Onyx soldiers that her brother stole from. Desperate to save her family, she offers them a deal - she will go with them willingly and allow them to use her for her rare healing powers if they let her family go free. They are in the middle of a war after all, so that power would be invaluable. They agree. Soon, Arwen finds herself working as the Onyx kingdom’s healer during the day, and their prisoner in a cold, dark cell at night. This is where she meets a very mysterious fellow prisoner 👀 and the story goes from there.
This series has everything you could want in a Romantasy - a slow-ish burn romance full of tension and the perfect amount of crumbs. There’s dragons, wyvern, witches, fae and even vampire-like creatures. There was a fun mix of likable grumpy and bubbly characters, and the romance was enjoyable. The 🌶️ increases with each book, but not frequent enough that it takes away from the story.
I was surprised to see so many mid reviews for this series because I absolutely devoured it. Maybe I’m the odd man out, but I highly recommend if you’re looking for a good Romantasy series that’s not too long and complicated!
