To all people interested in touring Highway No. 1:

😄Many friends, before embarking on Highway No. 1, will read all sorts of travel guides until they become dizzy, still unsure of how to make the most out of their trip. Today, combining local conditions and my own experiences, I've put together this travel guide to share the pitfalls I've experienced, hoping that friends about to visit Highway No. 1 can avoid these mishaps in time! If you're worried about encountering pitfalls on Highway No. 1, you can save this guide now. It can help to avoid 80-90% of the troubles. Novice travelers can rest assured and remember these tips!

🚗Recommended route: Depart from San Francisco, drive south along California Highway No. 1, passing through Monterey, Carmel, Big Sur, San Simeon, and other places, finally arriving in Los Angeles.

⏰Travel duration: It is advised to schedule around 3-5 days for the trip, in order to fully experience the beautiful scenery and charm along the way.

📸Must-visit attractions:

📍Half Moon Bay: A bay shaped like a half-moon, tranquil and beautiful.

📍Monterey Bay Aquarium: A famous aquarium with a rich variety of marine life.

📍17-Mile Drive: With its blue skies, clear seas, and peculiar rocks and pines, it is an excellent route for a driving tour.

📍Hearst Castle: A historic luxury castle with a garden, private zoo, and swimming pool.

📍Santa Monica Beach: A popular summer resort near Los Angeles, where you can ride a Ferris wheel overlooking the sea.

📍SLO Town: With seagulls and squirrels, surrounded by mountains, beaches, and deserts.

📍Big Sur: The world's most beautiful coastline, the essence of Highway No. 1.

📍Solvang: A small town with Danish charm.

📍Point Pigeon Lighthouse: One of the most famous photography spots on the California coastline.

📍Santa Barbara: A town with Mediterranean charm.

📍Hearst Castle: Known as the world’s largest private mansion.

🍔Food Recommendations:

📍Old Fisherman’s Grotto in Monterey: Classic American vintage decor with fresh ingredients and a wide range of dishes.

📍Flaherty's Seafood Grill: Specializes in Mediterranean/Greek-style seafood dishes. Seafood rice and fried oysters are recommended.

🏡Accommodation suggestions:

📍Monterey: You can choose to stay in a hotel near Old Fisherman's Wharf for convenience in sightseeing and food tasting.

📍Big Sur: Due to possible road closures, it is suggested to book accommodations in advance near San Simeon or Cambria.

📍Solvang: Experience Danish rural retro-style inns or European-style architecture hotels.

⚠️Considerations:

🧭Navigation: Some sections have no signal, so it's recommended to download offline maps in advance.

⛽️Refuel: Fill up on gas before entering the Big Sur area as gas stations in this region are few and expensive.

🚌Recommended itinerary for a 3-day trip:

☀️Day 1: San Francisco → Half Moon Bay → Town of Monterey → 17-Mile Drive → Town of Carmel

☀️Day 2: Town of Monterey → Big Sur → Mountain Top Sea View Restaurant → Bixby Bridge → Town of SLO

☀️Day 3: Town of SLO → Santa Barbara → Los Angeles

... Read moreHaving explored the breathtaking California Highway 1 multiple times, I always get asked about the best parts, especially the iconic Big Sur section. Many friends want a clear 'map of attractions' to truly make the most of their drive from San Francisco to Los Angeles. Beyond just listing places, I want to share how to experience Big Sur and its surroundings like a local, ensuring you don't miss any of its magic. Let's truly dive into the heart of Highway 1: Big Sur. This isn't just a drive; it's an experience where every turn offers a postcard-perfect view. As you navigate this winding coastline, the first major icon many look for is the Bixby Creek Bridge. In my experience, this isn't just a bridge; it's a monumental piece of art against the dramatic Pacific backdrop. There are usually pull-offs on both sides for incredible photo opportunities, but remember to be safe and mindful of traffic. Further south, don't just drive past; pull into Pfeiffer Big Sur State Park or Julia Pfeiffer Burns State Park. These parks are your gateway to redwood groves, hiking trails, and the famous McWay Falls, which plunges directly onto the beach (though often inaccessible, the viewpoint is stunning!). I always recommend a short hike here to truly feel the ancient forest air. And for those seeking a quieter escape, Garrapata State Park, just north of Big Sur, offers incredible coves and less crowded trails that are perfect for a peaceful morning stroll. For those starting their adventure from San Francisco and heading towards Big Sur, the journey itself is laden with charm. I love the scenic stop at Pigeon Point Lighthouse, a truly picturesque spot for photography, as mentioned in the OCR. As you continue south, the classic beauty of Monterey and Carmel-by-the-Sea awaits. And of course, the 17-Mile Drive offers those quintessential rugged coastline views, unique rock formations, and the famous Lone Cypress. These spots are your perfect warm-up before the majestic grandeur of Big Sur. Once you've soaked in Big Sur's wild beauty, the drive continues south with more incredible stops. A must-see, especially if you're traveling past Big Sur, is Hearst Castle. It's not just a castle; it's a sprawling estate, a testament to opulence and history. My top tip for Hearst Castle is to book your tickets well in advance, especially for specific tours like the Grand Rooms Tour, as they sell out fast! It’s a completely different experience from the natural beauty of Big Sur, offering a glimpse into early 20th-century luxury. And make sure to look out for the unique Piedras Blancas Elephant Seal Rookery just north of San Simeon – it's an incredible wildlife viewing experience that truly surprised me on my first trip. Seeing hundreds, sometimes thousands, of these massive seals lounging on the beach is unforgettable. To make your 'map' of attractions truly come alive, remember these practicalities: cell service can be spotty, so downloading offline maps is a game-changer. I learned this the hard way! Also, gas stations are few and far between in Big Sur and can be very expensive, so fill up your tank before you enter the area. By planning ahead and knowing what iconic spots lie ahead, your Highway 1 road trip, especially through Big Sur, will be nothing short of spectacular. It's truly a journey that stays with you long after you've returned home!

Morro Bay and Cayucos, just north of SLO, are perfect small town beaches to spend the day and great places to grab some fish and chips while walking the pier in Cayucos or hanging out next to Morro Rock after shopping the small boutique stores in town!

we all know the struggle 😅 you don’t feel like you can say no to plans. someone asks about details of your life you don’t want to share, but you feel obligated. your manager asks you to work more hours, and you automatically say yes. breaking the people pleasing cycle is uncomfortable as hell. i
