Comprehensive guide to travel in China (2)

Travel Tips for Visiting China

1. Apps and Smartphone Usage 📱

📍VPN is Essential: Some foreign social media apps (like Facebook, Instagram) and Google services are inaccessible in China. Download a reliable VPN before your trip.

📍Must-Have Apps:

📍WeChat: The go-to app for communication and payments.

📍Alipay: Another convenient payment app used for shopping, transportation, and more.

📍DiDi: China’s version of Uber, with an English interface.

📍Baidu Maps or Amap: For navigation and public transportation info (Google Maps may have limited functionality).

📍Translation Tools: Google Translate or WeChat’s built-in translation can help with menus, signs, and conversations.

‼️For international travel, I highly recommend bring disposable underwear. ‼️Not every hotel abroad has a laundry room, and disposable underwear can save you a lot of time and hassle when it comes to washing clothes. It’s a game changer for a more enjoyable trip! Check out the link in photo 10–give it a try!😎😎

2. Currency and Payments 💰

📍Digital Payments Rule: Mobile payments dominate in China, but American credit cards may not work. Set up Alipay International or link your card to WeChat.

📍Cash Backup: Small shops and local markets may still require cash. Carry some Chinese yuan for emergencies.

📍Currency Exchange: Use airports or official banks for currency exchange—avoid unofficial channels.

3. Transportation 🚆

☝️Subways and Buses:

📍Major cities have efficient subway systems with English signage. Tickets can be purchased via vending machines or mobile apps.

📍Buses rarely have English announcements, so plan routes ahead.

📍High-Speed Trains:

📍High-speed rail is fast, reliable, and ideal for long-distance travel. Book tickets in advance via the 12306 website or platforms like Ctrip.

📍Carry your passport as it’s required for ticketing and boarding.

📍Taxis and Ride-Hailing:

📍Use DiDi for a smoother experience, but note that some smaller cities might require basic Chinese communication.

📍Ensure the taxi driver uses the meter.

📍Bike Sharing 🚴:

📍Rent shared bikes (like Meituan Bikes) for short distances. Just scan the QR code to unlock.

4. Language and Communication 🗣️

📍Basic Phrases: Learn some simple Chinese phrases like “你好” (Hello), “谢谢” (Thank you), and “多少钱” (How much?).

📍Translation Tools: Use apps for live translations of conversations, menus, or street signs.

📍Hotel Address: Always carry a card with your hotel’s address or take a photo of it to show taxi drivers.

5. Dining Etiquette 🍜

☝️Eating Out:

📍Explore local specialties and street food! Ask about ingredients if you have allergies or dietary restrictions.

📍No tipping is required in most restaurants, as service fees are included.

📍Drink Water Safely: Avoid tap water; stick to bottled water or boiled water.

📍Food Delivery: Apps like Meituan or Ele.me provide delivery services, though they are mostly in Chinese.

6. Cultural Norms and Habits 🌏

☝️Social Etiquette:

📍Handshakes are the most common greeting—hugging or kissing is rare.

📍Avoid loud conversations, especially on public transportation.

📍Queues and Order: While most places have orderly lines, some crowded spots (e.g., train stations) may not. Stay patient!

📍Sensitive Topics: Avoid discussions about politics or religion.

7. Shopping 🛍️

📍Haggling: Negotiating prices is common in markets but not in malls.

... Read moreBeyond the essential apps and etiquette, many of you asked about what to actually see and do and what to pack for China! After my own incredible journey, I’ve got some insider tips to make your trip unforgettable. Must-Visit Cities & Experiences (from my travel diary!): If you're wondering where to start, China offers an incredible range of experiences. For history buffs, Beijing is a must-see with its iconic Great Wall and Forbidden City. I was absolutely captivated by the Terracotta Army in Xi'an – truly breathtaking! And if you're like me and adore wildlife, the Panda Base in Chengdu is an absolute dream; don't forget to wander through Jinli Ancient Street for some local flavor. For a taste of modern China mixed with traditional charm, Shanghai's Bund skyline is unbeatable, especially at night. I also spent some serene days in Hangzhou, captivated by the beauty of West Lake and the peaceful Lingyin Temple. And how can I forget the vibrant energy of Hong Kong? Victoria Harbour and The Peak offer views you'll never forget! While I didn't make it to every single place, places like Zhangjiajie (avatar mountains!) and Guilin (stunning karst landscapes) are high on my list for next time. When planning your route, use Baidu Maps or Amap to check distances and public transport options between these incredible destinations; it really helps visualize your journey. Your Ultimate China Packing Checklist (Don't forget these!): Beyond your passport and travel documents, here's what I found truly essential: Power Adapter & Portable Charger: With all the photo-taking and map-checking, your phone battery will thank you. China uses Type A, C, and I sockets, so a universal adapter is ideal. Comfortable Walking Shoes: You'll be doing a lot of walking, especially exploring ancient streets or hiking the Great Wall. My feet were so grateful for cushioned sneakers! Basic First-Aid Kit: Small cuts, blisters, or an upset stomach can happen. Having your own remedies saves time and hassle. Travel-sized Toiletries: Not all hotels provide everything, and having your favorites is always a comfort. Physical Copies of Documents: While digital is great, a photocopy of your passport and visa, and even hotel bookings, can be a lifesaver if your phone dies or gets lost. Eye Mask & Earplugs: Essential for long flights, high-speed train naps, or if you're sensitive to light/noise in your accommodation. Disposable Underwear: Seriously, as mentioned earlier, this was a game-changer! Especially when laundry facilities aren't guaranteed, it made my trip so much lighter and worry-free. I picked up some 'MOKO Premium Disposable Underwear' before my trip and it was fantastic – linked in one of the photos from my original post! Remember, having a well-thought-out plan for what you want to see and a smart packing list will make your China adventure so much more enjoyable. Happy travels!
