She Goes by Many Names… and Deserves Them All

Since you're here, you're probably as captivated by the variegated Chinese Money Plant, or as I lovingly call mine, the 'Variegated UFO Plant,' as I am! These beauties aren't just pretty faces; they're incredibly rewarding to care for. If you're wondering how to keep your own coin-carrying companion thriving, or perhaps considering getting one, let me share some of my personal experiences and tips. Caring for this iconic plant is actually quite straightforward, which is one of the many reasons I adore it. First off, light is key. While my original post mentioned bright, indirect light, let me elaborate a bit. Think of a spot near a window that gets plenty of light throughout the day, but where the sun's rays don't directly hit the leaves for long periods. Direct, harsh sun can scorch those beautiful variegated patches, turning them brown. If your plant starts looking leggy or its variegation isn't as pronounced, it might be craving a slightly brighter spot. Watering is another crucial aspect. I usually wait until the top inch or two of the soil feels dry to the touch before giving it a good soak. It’s better to slightly underwater than overwater, as these plants are prone to root rot. Make sure your pot has drainage holes – absolutely essential! As for soil, a well-draining potting mix is best. I often mix in some perlite or chunky bark to ensure good aeration. They aren't super fussy about humidity, but I've noticed mine appreciates a little misting now and then, especially during drier months. A regular house temperature is perfectly fine for them, ideally between 65-75°F (18-24°C). I also give mine a diluted liquid fertilizer once a month during the growing season (spring and summer) to encourage lush growth. Now, for my absolute favorite part: propagation! This truly is the 'Pass-it-on Plant' because it's so generous with its babies. You'll often see little plantlets, or 'pups,' growing directly from the soil around the mother plant. When these pups are a few inches tall and have a couple of leaves, you can gently separate them from the main root system using a clean knife or your fingers. I like to pot them directly into small pots with fresh soil, and they usually root up quite quickly. You can also take stem cuttings from the main plant. Just snip a healthy stem with a few leaves, remove the lowest leaves, and you can root it in water or directly in soil. I've had great success with both methods! Watching them develop roots and grow into new plants is incredibly satisfying and makes for wonderful, thoughtful gifts. Even though they're low-stress, you might encounter a minor hiccup or two. Yellowing lower leaves can often indicate overwatering or nutrient deficiency, so check your watering schedule and maybe consider that monthly feed. If the leaves are drooping, it's usually a sign of thirst. Give it a good drink, and it should perk up within hours. Pests are rare, but keep an eye out for common houseplant culprits like spider mites or mealybugs, especially on the undersides of leaves. A quick wipe with a damp cloth or a neem oil spray usually takes care of it. The variegation itself is a natural genetic mutation, giving each leaf its unique splash of white or light green.
