Let's dive deeper into their care. While I mentioned bright, indirect light, think about placing them near an east-facing window or a few feet back from a south or west-facing one. Too much direct sun can scorch those gorgeous, waxy leaves, especially on the variegated types like Mauna Loa, causing the lighter parts to burn. On the flip side, too little light can lead to sparse growth and a reluctance to bloom. For that ‘chunky, well-draining soil mix,’ I swear by a blend that includes orchid bark, perlite, and a good quality potting soil. This ensures excellent aeration and drainage, preventing root rot, which Hoyas are quite susceptible to. The 'good dry-out between waterings' is key! I usually wait until the top few inches of soil are completely dry, and the leaves might feel slightly less firm, almost like a soft taco. When in doubt, it’s better to underwater than overwater. They’re pretty forgiving if you wait a day or two longer. Humidity is another factor that can make a big difference for these tropical plants.
