Us and the Ultra High Net Worth
Hi readers! In this post we would dive into the world of the Ultra High Net Worth (UHNW) to understand how they view wealth and manage their assets. We can consider making this as a series of post if you guys love it!
The first distinction that we can explore is: Professional Management
For most of us, we would approach investments or our financial needs as something that we can DIY. We would place trades on our own, research on our own, login to banking apps or visit the banks for all any need ourselves.
UHNW individuals (or we can call them UHNWI), delegates all these tasks to a relationship manager or their family office. So, lets imagine the following situations:
1. UHNWI receives a call from his private banker recommending him a company worth investing in according to in-house research. UHNWI then confirms to his bankers to go ahead to place the trades with their recommend stop loss and take profit targets.
2. UHNWI doesn’t really have the time to be bothered with placing trades at all and just want someone to handle it for them. Works with the private bank’s portfolio management team or engages an external asset manager to deal with all investment granting them rights to execute trades on his/her behalf. The UHNWI pays an annual management fee and performance related fees for this service.
3. Private bank requires the UHNWI to sign bank related forms. In some cases, they approach his “Gate-Keeper” who could be a trusted individual from his Family Office or his personal assistant. This person would then consolidate and review the forms before getting the UHNWI to sign off all at the comfort of his office, car or even residence.
While the above is just a glimpse into their life, you would see that if they are not finance professionals, they would much rather hire a professional to run the show. This is so that their time could be better spent on their business which they are best at.
For most of us, there could be ways we can get professionals into our financial lives, follow up with our post next week to find out how!

From my experience researching UHNW individuals, one key aspect that stands out is their reliance on expert teams for comprehensive wealth planning. Rather than tackling financial decisions themselves, many engage family offices or dedicated wealth managers who handle everything—from investment selection to budgeting and philanthropic initiatives. These professionals also help UHNWIs navigate complex issues like debt management, tax planning, and global travel expenses, all while aligning with their long-term goals like sustainable giving or lifestyle aspirations. Often, a trusted gatekeeper within their circle, such as a personal assistant or family office member, coordinates paperwork and communications to minimize disruption. For average investors, adopting a piece of this strategy—like consulting certified wealth advisors or using portfolio management services—can add significant value. It’s about delegating what you’re less skilled at or have less time for, similar to the UHNW model, but scaled to individual needs and budgets. This insight bridges the gap from paycheck-to-paycheck budgeting toward smart investing and growing one’s wealth systematically.
