We’ve got the next match from DC K.O.’s Tie-In comics and it’s WONDER WOMAN VS LOBO. This is written by Joëlle Jones and drawn with Jason Howard, Cary Nord, and Daniel Bayliss.
Right off the bat, I’m gonna say that I was disappointed with this one. I wasn’t sure how each of the fights were gonna go, but this one felt especially weak. Jones was in a tough spot with extremely powerful immortal warriors but there could’ve been some more chutzpah. The different artstyles bring some energy to each of the matches. From regular fistfights, brawling on bikes, and getting some help from the Prescence. I just wish I could’ve had a bit more fun. How did you guys feel about this one?
... Read moreWhen I first heard about a Wonder Woman vs. Lobo showdown in the DC K.O. series, my expectations were through the roof! I mean, you have the Amazonian Princess, a literal demigoddess with incredible strength, speed, and warrior training, armed with her Lasso of Truth and indestructible bracelets. On the other side, you've got Lobo, the Main Man, a virtually immortal, super-strong, and relentlessly brutal bounty hunter from space. This isn't just any superheroine fight; it's a clash of titans! You’d think this would be the ultimate "superheroine video" come to life in comic form, right?
The comic's cover itself, showing them in a dynamic fight pose against a starry, pink background, really hyped me up. It promised an epic struggle, but as I delved deeper, I found myself questioning what could have been.
Let's break down the rounds, drawing from what I saw. In Round 1, the comic started with a basic fist fight, and honestly, Lobo seemed to have the upper hand. Seeing a blood-splattered Lobo mockingly ask 'WHATCHA GONNA DO, LI'L LADY?' before Wonder Woman lay defeated with question marks above her head, felt like a quick setup for a comeback, but it left me a bit underwhelmed. I expected a more drawn-out struggle for Diana.
Round 2 definitely picked up the pace! We saw new forms and allies, with "Wondy with the girls" (her warrior sisters) joining the fray. The action intensified, with Wonder Woman ingeniously winning this round by using Lobo's vehicle against him, leading to an explosion. This was the kind of creative combat I was hoping for, showcasing her tactical brilliance.
Then came Round 3. This is where things got really interesting, with Lobo apparently losing his immortality – a massive power shift! Wonder Woman ultimately won this round after a series of mini-matches, landing a satisfying punch with a 'THHHHWICK!' sound effect. But for such a pivotal moment, the narrative felt a little rushed, almost glossing over the full impact of Lobo losing his signature ability.
The comic even included a brief Booster Gold Intermission, which was a nice touch for DC fans, but it also broke the flow of what should have been a relentless main event.
While the different art styles brought some energy to each segment, I felt the overall execution didn't quite match the potential of these two iconic characters. For fans who admire the Wonder Woman emblem or are intrigued by the sheer chaos of Lobo from DC, the expectation for a truly memorable battle is high. I was looking for moments that would define their rivalry, a fight that pushed both characters to their limits, not just a series of quick wins and losses. Perhaps more focus on the deep motivations or the sheer scale of their powers could have elevated it. What do you think makes a truly great superhero fight?
