umm yeah…that’s Al I can star off with because this was certainly a fight. That’s what happened. It was a bit underwhelming from Zatanna losing all her hand-to-hand combat, the buzzwords, and the fighting. It’s been a struggle to get through some of the ladies’ fights in DC KO. The art is cute and lively, although I have to admit that it couldn’t really save some of Harley’s costume changes. I love her, but her sense of style outside of “Jester-coded” is not my fave. How are you guys feeling about this fight? Think the next will be better?
... Read moreOkay, if you've already read my quick take on the Harley Quinn vs. Zatanna showdown in DC KO's Fight Month, you know I wasn't entirely thrilled. But let's dive a little deeper into why this matchup, which has so much potential, felt a bit flat for some of us. When you pit the Mistress of Magic, Zatanna, against the unpredictable Queen of Chaos, Harley Quinn, you expect a spectacle of magic, mayhem, and strategic brilliance.
Zatanna, with her backward-spoken spells, is one of the most powerful magic users in the DC universe. Her powers range from elemental control and teleportation to illusion casting and reality warping. She's not just a powerhouse; she's also incredibly intelligent and often relies on her wit as much as her magic. On the other hand, Harley Quinn is a master of acrobatic combat, an expert psychiatrist, and completely unhinged. Her fighting style is chaotic, relying on unexpected moves, psychological tactics, and an array of bizarre gadgets. The "Harley Quinn #1 Williams Anoolfo Zatanna vs. Fajardo Jr" issue should have been an epic clash of these contrasting styles.
What struck me in the comic, and what many fans might agree on, is the portrayal of Zatanna's combat skills. The original review mentioned her "losing all her hand-to-hand combat," and seeing lines like "She's being sooo buddy-buddy with her...in here???" early on, followed by "What is this? A blunt force hysterectomy? Harley Quinn 1 Zatanna 0" in the first round, made me wonder if the actual physical prowess of Zatanna was fully utilized. Yes, Harley's unpredictability is her strength, but Zatanna isn't just a spellcaster; she's also highly agile and has held her own physically against formidable opponents. The idea of her being on the back foot so quickly, especially in a physical exchange, felt a little off.
Then we get to Round 2, "SHUFF... Yeah she's pissed now Round 2 Harley Quinn 1 Zatanna 1," and the observation "slay! Oh now she's copying her style." While Harley's mimicry and adaptability are part of her charm, it felt like the unique magical elements that define Zatanna weren't quite given their due until later. The dialogue "WHO ARE YOU GASLIGHTING OH, UH- DONT MOREY Let's not misuse therapyspeak Zatanna..." was a highlight, bringing a bit of Harley's psychological edge into play, but I was craving more of Zatanna's magical counters.
Ultimately, the "ZATANNA WINS! Round 3 Harley Quinn 1 Zatanna 2" shows the expected outcome, with "KNEW YOU HAD IT IN YA... But you can't out-magic the mistress of magic." This final panel reinforces Zatanna's power, but the journey to get there felt like it missed opportunities to showcase the full range of both characters' abilities in a truly dynamic, magical and physical battle. Imagine a fight where Zatanna's illusions mess with Harley's perception, or Harley's surprise attacks force Zatanna into intricate, split-second spellcasting. That's the kind of high-stakes, character-driven action I personally crave from a "Harley Quinn vs Zatanna" fight. It's not just about who wins, but how they win, and the creative ways their unique powers clash.
For anyone hoping to experience a truly iconic clash between these two, I'd say the potential is still immense. While this particular "DC KO" installment had its moments, it left me pondering what a truly epic encounter would look like. What are your favorite Zatanna or Harley Quinn battles? And "WHO'S NEXT?!" in DC KO's Fight Month that you're excited for?
