I’ve heard this question countless times, especially from those with a deep, sincere desire to truly know Him. It’s not a question asked out of malice; it springs from a genuine longing in our hearts, a yearning to connect with the divine. So many of us, myself included, have felt that sense of searching, wondering where God is when our hearts ache to feel Him close. This longing often intensifies during different seasons of life. Perhaps you’re in a state of peril or suffering, feeling a profound woundedness, and desperately want to know where God is in the midst of your pain. When life hits hard, it's natural to seek comfort and reassurance from a higher power. On the other hand, sometimes this question comes from a place of joy, an excitement of wanting to pursue Him even more. You know He’s there, you trust He’s there, but you just can't quite feel His presence yet, and you're eager to deepen that connection. So, how do we bridge that gap and truly experience God's presence? It’s not always about a dramatic, visible sign; often, it’s in the quiet, consistent pursuit. Here are a few things I've learned on my journey to feel God’s presence more consistently: First, Cultivate a Posture of Expectation. God is always present, but sometimes we need to open our hearts and minds to perceive Him. Start your day by simply acknowledging His presence. It's like preparing your home for a guest you know is already there, just waiting to be noticed. Second, Engage with Scripture and Prayer. These aren't just religious duties; they are powerful avenues for spiritual connection. When you read the Bible, ask God to speak to you through His words. When you pray, don't just list requests; spend time listening, offering praise, and simply being with Him. I’ve found that even short, focused prayer times can make a huge difference in helping me feel His presence. Third, Look for Him in the Everyday. God's presence isn't confined to church walls or peak spiritual moments. It can be found in the beauty of nature, a kind word from a stranger, a moment of unexpected peace, or the quiet strength you find when facing a challenge. When I started intentionally looking for these small glimpses, my awareness of His constant presence grew immensely. It’s like a treasure hunt, and the reward is a deeper sense of connection. Fourth, Practice Gratitude. An attitude of gratitude shifts our focus from what's lacking to what's abundant, opening our eyes to the blessings that are often expressions of God's care. Regularly listing things I'm grateful for has surprisingly helped me to feel God's presence more acutely, reminding me of His provision and love. Finally, Connect with Other Believers. There's something powerful about experiencing God's presence in community. Sharing your faith journey, praying with others, and worshipping together can amplify your sense of connection. We're meant to encourage each other, and sometimes, seeing God work in someone else's life can help us recognize His hand in our own. Remember, feeling God's presence is a journey, not a destination. There will be days when it feels strong and clear, and days when it feels distant. But that doesn't mean He's gone. Keep seeking, keep knocking, and trust that He desires to be known by you even more than you desire to know Him. You are deeply loved, and His presence is always available.
