Not listening

4/18 Edited to

... Read moreDealing with kids who don’t listen can be challenging, but over time I’ve learned that the way we communicate plays a huge role in their responsiveness. One surprising tactic that actually works is whispering instead of yelling—this unexpected approach naturally catches kids’ attention because it breaks their usual expectation of loud commands. When whispering, children often pause to listen closely, which provides a calm environment to reinforce the message. It’s also essential to speak to children at their level. This means getting down physically to their eye line and using language they understand. Doing so not only makes them feel respected but also improves their ability to focus on what you’re saying. Combining kindness with firmness strikes the right balance—children respond better when they feel cared for but also recognize clear boundaries. Playfulness is another key element. Turning instructions into a game or adding a playful tone makes the interaction more engaging and less like a chore. Kids can shut down when they feel pressured, but being playful helps keep communication fun and dynamic. Remember to acknowledge your child’s emotions during discussions. For example, if a child is upset, attending to their feelings before addressing the behavior can create openness and willingness to listen. This emotional connection builds trust and makes kids more receptive. In my experience, rather than resorting to yelling which often leads to kids tuning out or reacting negatively, these approaches foster a healthier and more positive communication dynamic. Patience and consistency are vital, and over time you’ll notice better listening habits and a closer relationship with your children.
