Let’s talk about teacher mental health ⬇️

My first year of teaching I was diagnosed with anxiety and depression.

I woke up 1 week into winter break looking around the room and started bawling because I spent my entire first week sleeping out of peer exhaustion.

It was at this moment I decided to change things. If I couldn’t find a way to make teaching easier I didn’t want it.

1 year later I am home 10 minutes after contract time on a Monday. I am planned and prepped for the next week. My grades are all done. And I already printed out the weekly newsletter for families.

I chose me. But by choosing me I chose my students. I chose the impactful teacher I was meant to be.

Choosing you is how you get to the other side of this. Choosing you is how you live your dream life. Choosing you is how you make a deeper impact you ever thought possible.

Choosing me was the best decision I ever made. <3

When did you choose your mental health over your career?

... Read moreBuilding on my journey as a first-year teacher where I truly learned the meaning of prioritizing my well-being, I want to share more about how I managed to shift from burnout to balance. It wasn't an overnight change, but a series of intentional choices that ultimately saved my career and my peace of mind. Many of us enter teaching with so much passion, only to find ourselves overwhelmed by the demands. That's why understanding and actively practicing teacher self-care and effective stress management as a teacher is absolutely vital. One of the biggest lessons I learned during my first year was the importance of setting boundaries. Initially, I felt guilty leaving school at contract time, or not spending every evening grading. But I quickly realized that constantly pushing myself past my limits wasn't making me a better teacher; it was making me resentful and exhausted. I started by scheduling non-negotiable personal time into my week – whether it was for a walk, reading a book, or just relaxing. This simple act of choosing my mental health over always working helped me recharge and come back to my students with renewed energy and patience. Another game-changer for my teacher well-being was streamlining my workflow. I spent a lot of time finding efficient ways to plan lessons, grade assignments, and communicate with parents. Utilizing templates, batching similar tasks, and even delegating where possible (like student helpers for simple tasks) freed up precious hours. It’s about working smarter, not harder. For example, instead of personalizing every newsletter, I created a weekly template that only required minor updates. This small change had a huge impact on my Sunday evenings! Connecting with other educators also provided immense support. I found a few seasoned teachers who were willing to share their wisdom and strategies for managing the workload. Knowing I wasn't alone in facing these challenges, and hearing practical advice from those who had been there, was incredibly validating. We often feel isolated in our classrooms, but building a community, even a small one, is crucial for mental health for teachers. Don't hesitate to reach out to colleagues or join online educator groups. Sharing burdens and victories can make a world of difference. Finally, I committed to regular self-reflection. At the end of each week, I’d take a few minutes to think about what went well, what was challenging, and what I could adjust for the following week. This wasn't about dwelling on negatives, but about continuous improvement and acknowledging my efforts. It helped me identify patterns that led to stress and proactively seek solutions. This practice is part of an ongoing commitment to teacher self-care and ensuring that my passion for teaching doesn't lead to burnout again. Remember, managing stress as a teacher isn't a one-time fix; it's an ongoing practice of choosing yourself, every single day.
