New and First Year Teacher Interview Tips

Let’s talk about interviewing ⬇️

1. Research Districts

After you compile a list, start doing research on each district. I recommend taking note of each districts mission statement, values, niche.com info, where the application location, contact info for application, and job listing roles and responsibilities

2. Tailor Your Cover Letter and Resume

Instead of making one generic resume, I like to make copies of my original resume. From there I pick 2-3 values or similarities I am also passionate about that my district has and incorporate it into my cover letter and resume. You don’t need to go overboard. Just some minor tweaks.

3. The Job is in the Follow-Up

I always follow up 1-2 weeks after an application or interview. Thank the district for their time. Reiterate how excited you are to help the district achieve its mission and uphold its values by doing x,y,z. Reiterate how your experience can help them achieve that goal. Tell them what makes you stand apart from others aka “It Factor.” And finally thank them for their consideration and that you are available if they need any other resources of info from you.

4. It Factor

What I love about teachers is we are all different. One way to show up confidently during an interview is getting clear on what sets you apart from others. Why do you want to teach? What experiences have you had that maybe other teachers haven’t? Why is it important to you to impact future generations? Lean into this while interviewing.

... Read moreOkay, fellow aspiring teachers, let's get real about those interview jitters! I remember feeling a mix of excitement and pure panic when preparing for my first teaching interviews. The initial article gives fantastic foundational tips, but I wanted to dive deeper into what questions you might actually face and how to craft answers that truly shine, helping you hit those 'teacher interview questions and answers' searches head-on. One question that almost always comes up is, 'What is your teaching philosophy?' Don't just recite textbook definitions! This is your chance to show your passion and personality. For me, it's about creating a student-centered, inclusive environment where every child feels seen and empowered to explore. Think about your core beliefs: Do you prioritize hands-on learning? Differentiated instruction? Building strong community? Weave in a brief, personal example. For instance, I might say, 'My philosophy centers on fostering curiosity through inquiry-based projects, much like when I guided my practicum students in designing their own miniature ecosystems, seeing their engagement skyrocket.' This helps answer 'philosophy in education as a teacher' queries effectively. Another common one is about classroom management. They want to know you can handle a busy classroom! Instead of saying, 'I'm good at managing behavior,' share a story – a real-life scenario. For example, 'In my student teaching, I had a particularly energetic group. I implemented a positive reinforcement system with a class token board, which significantly reduced disruptions and built a sense of collective responsibility among the students.' This directly addresses the OCR's 'Share stories' tip and makes your answer concrete. And what about the dreaded 'What are your career goals?' question, or the more specific 'briefly explain what your career goals are. for example: "i would like to pursue a career as a teacher; right now i think i would like to be a high school math teacher, but i’m not sure yet."'? It's okay not to have a 20-year plan solidified! Be honest but enthusiastic. You could say, 'My immediate goal is to establish myself as an effective and beloved [elementary/math/primary] teacher here at [District Name], contributing actively to the school community. Long-term, I'm eager to explore opportunities for professional development, perhaps specializing in [a particular area like instructional technology or curriculum design] as I gain more experience.' This shows commitment and a growth mindset. Sometimes, especially for elementary or primary school positions, you might be asked to present a 'lesson plan for interview.' Don't panic! Choose a topic you're passionate about and that aligns with the grade level. Keep it engaging, interactive, and concise. Focus on how you'd differentiate for various learners and how you'd assess understanding. Practice it beforehand, perhaps with a friendly audience. Lastly, remember that the best answers always tie back to the specific school and district you're interviewing with. Your initial research (from the main article's first tip!) is gold here. Mention their mission statement or a specific program they offer. Show them you've done your homework and that you genuinely want to be their teacher. You've got this!
