Outdoor cooking 🍳
There's an undeniable magic that comes with outdoor cooking, especially when you're nestled in nature, surrounded by a mountain and forest backdrop, perhaps with a distant lake shimmering. While the scent of sizzling scrambled eggs, savory sausage, and grilling chicken, mushrooms, and bell peppers from my cast iron pans and skewers fills the air, there’s one simple addition that elevates the entire experience: a perfectly brewed cup of campfire tea. My trusty black kettle, often perched near the roaring fire alongside my cooking pans, isn't just for boiling water for coffee or washing dishes. It's the heart of a truly cozy outdoor moment. Imagine finishing a hearty meal of fried eggs and grilled meat, then settling back as the embers glow, a warm mug of tea in hand. It’s pure bliss and makes those pictures of campfire tea in nature so appealing. Making tea over a campfire is simpler than you might think, yet it adds so much to the ambiance. First, you need a good, sturdy kettle – mine is heat-resistant and has a strong handle. Fill it with fresh water, ideally from a reliable source or purified. Then, carefully place it over the flames or, even better, on a metal grate positioned slightly above the main heat. This allows for a more controlled boil. While waiting for the water to reach a rolling boil, I usually prepare my tea bags or loose-leaf infuser. For outdoor adventures, I love robust black teas, earthy herbal blends, or even a spiced chai – something that can stand up to the crisp outdoor air and feel incredibly comforting. Once the water is ready, carefully remove the kettle (always use heat-resistant gloves!) and steep your tea. I often let it brew for a few minutes longer than usual to get a stronger flavor, perfect for warding off the chill of a cool evening. A little honey or a slice of lemon, if you’ve packed them, can be a delightful addition. This simple ritual transforms a regular outdoor meal into a holistic sensory experience. It’s not just about the warmth; it's about slowing down, connecting with the natural surroundings, and savoring the quiet moments. The gentle hiss of the kettle, the crackle of the campfire, the fresh air – it all combines to create a peaceful setting. Whether it’s a morning wake-up call with a strong brew or a calming evening drink under the stars, campfire tea is an essential part of my outdoor cooking repertoire. It truly completes the picture of a perfect day spent feasting and relaxing in the heart of nature.
