Woolly bear caterpillars are often associated with folklore predicting the upcoming winter's harshness. According to tradition, the amount of black and brown coloration on the caterpillar's fuzzy body can forecast the winter ahead. The more black segments present, the harsher the winter is expected to be. Conversely, a predominance of brown is thought to signal a milder winter. More specifically, the caterpillar's head and tail colors are believed to provide additional seasonal clues.
