Mounting Blocks- Yay or “Neigh?”🐴

From my own experience with horseback riding, mounting blocks have been a real game-changer, especially when tackling horses with a taller stature. Initially, I shared the common skepticism about using blocks, mostly because of the Western riding community's traditional views that emphasize mounting without aids. However, when I faced a minor injury that limited the strength in my legs, using a mounting block not only made getting on my horse more manageable but also relieved stress on both me and my horse. In English riding circles, mounting blocks are quite common and seen as a practical tool that preserves the horse’s back by minimizing pressure during mounting. I think this is a key point because mounting from the ground repeatedly can create unnecessary strain for the animal. Plus, it promotes better posture as riders can mount smoothly and securely. I noticed that when you use a mounting block, it also encourages good horsemanship because it reduces sudden movements that could spook the horse. For riders recovering from injury or beginners still mastering balance, blocks are invaluable. Although some Western riders might see it as unnecessary, I believe the safety and comfort benefits outweigh tradition in many situations. Overall, I support using mounting blocks as a personal preference and a sensible practice, especially to accommodate rider needs and horse welfare. It's important everyone learns to mount properly from the ground eventually, but having a mounting block as an option is practical and should not be stigmatized.
