These are physical remnants of behavior. Archival Data: Looking at existing records, documents, or data sets like historical records, social media posts, or official statistics. No direct interaction is needed. Simple Observation: Silently watching people in public spaces, like how many people stop at a specific art exhibit or how pedestrian traffic flows in a park. The key is to blend in completely. What I find most compelling is the practicality and ethical advantages in certain situations. By not directly interacting, researchers can sometimes avoid complex ethical dilemmas that arise from direct engagement. Plus, it can be incredibly cost-effective as it often uses existing data or natural settings. However, it's not without its challenges. Interpreting the data can be tricky because you're inferring behavior rather than asking directly. You might see a pattern but not understand the 'why' behind it without further investigation. For example, if you see many worn-out books on a topic, you know they're popular, but not why they're popular.
