Welcome to the Ripple Effect Community

🌊Did you know adoption affects every child in the home, not just the adoptee?🌊

When a new sibling comes home, the biological child's world shifts too. Their birth order. Their identity. Their sense of where they belong in the family. Most of the time, no one stops to ask how they are doing.

That quiet shift? That is the ripple no one talks about.

I created The Ripple Effect Community because I have lived this from almost every angle as an adoptee, an adopter, a grieving mother, and a grandmother raising grandchildren. My doctoral research in Public Health confirms what so many families already feel but can not name.

Every child in the family system deserves to be seen. Every single one.

💬 Have you experienced this in your own family? I am genuinely curious about your story. Drop it in the comments below. Your experience matters here.

... Read moreHaving personally experienced the complexities that adoption brings to family dynamics, I find that the effect on biological children is often underestimated. When a new sibling is adopted into the family, it’s natural for their arrival to shift the family structure in subtle yet profound ways. I’ve seen how birth order disruption can deeply affect a biological child's sense of identity and position within the family. They may feel the need to reduce their emotional space to accommodate the new member, sometimes leading to them becoming the 'invisible child.' From my own family experience combined with knowledge from trauma-informed care and family systems theory, it’s clear that siblings witness not only the excitement of a new family member but also the stress and dysregulated behaviors that can arise during adjustment. This ‘ripple effect’ can trigger primary trauma responses in siblings, which requires understanding and support to navigate effectively. By recognizing and validating each child’s experience within the family, we create an environment where no one feels overlooked. It helped me to appreciate the value of open dialogue and community support in healing these unseen impacts. Connecting with others who truly understand these complex emotions has been a vital part of my journey. If you’ve felt this silent shift in your family, sharing your story can help bring awareness and healing to this often invisible challenge. Joining communities like The Ripple Effect not only provides a space to be heard but also offers tools anchored in research and lived experience to foster healthier family relationships. The journey is ongoing, but knowing that every child's feelings and experiences matter is the first step toward a balanced and compassionate family dynamic.
