spooky movies to watch with the family

🎃October has officially begun so I thought I'd put together a list of fun Halloween movies the family can enjoy together.

👻Obviously viewer discretion is advised and parents have every right to discern what is appropriate for their children to watch! I was able to watch all these movies as a child with my family and enjoyed them, but I can certainly acknowledge that my taste doesn't speak for everyone!

🧡The majority of these movies are appropriate for young children, but movies like The Witches and Gremlins may be a little much for very young kids. If you have family friendly fall movie recommendations please drop them below!!!

Happy spooky season everyone!

... Read moreOkay, can we talk about Hocus Pocus (the original 1993 one, of course!) for a second? Every October, without fail, my family has to watch it. It’s got that perfect blend of silly witches, classic Halloween vibes, and just enough spooky moments to keep everyone entertained without being genuinely scary. The Sanderson sisters are iconic, and honestly, who doesn't love Bette Midler, Sarah Jessica Parker, and Kathy Najimy? It really holds up, even after all these years, and it's a fantastic choice for any generation looking for a nostalgic, fun fright. And speaking of iconic, *The Addams Family*! Whether you're into the original movie or *Addams Family Values*, these films are just exquisite in their own quirky way. They embrace the macabre with such style and humor. It’s not about jump scares; it’s about their wonderfully gothic aesthetic and hilarious family dynamics. For families looking for something a bit different from the usual Halloween fare, but still completely family-appropriate, the Addams are a must-watch. They teach us that 'normal' is overrated, and that celebrating your unique self is the best kind of magic! Now, about movies like *The Haunted Mansion*. Some of you might be looking for something with a bit more 'oomph,' maybe even 'zombies' as some searches suggest! While The Haunted Mansion leans more into ghosts and fun supernatural antics rather than traditional zombies, it definitely delivers on the spooky atmosphere without being too intense. If you're craving something with a dash of the undead, but still keeping it family-friendly, movies like ParaNorman (which is also on the list!) do an amazing job with stop-motion animation and a heartwarming story about a boy who can talk to ghosts and ghouls. Or think about the Scooby-Doo movies—they always have a mystery and some 'monsters' that might give you that slightly eerie feeling without being too intense. The key is finding that perfect balance where it's spooky enough for older kids but not nightmare-inducing for the little ones. Creating a '31 Days of Spooky Movies' marathon, just like the graphic suggests, makes October so much fun! We love picking one movie each night, or at least a few times a week. It becomes a ritual. My personal tips for the ultimate spooky movie night? Snacks are key! Think pumpkin spice popcorn, ghost-shaped cookies, or even a 'witch's brew' punch. Cozy up! Blankets, pillows, and dim lighting make everything feel more festive. Discussion time! After the movie, talk about your favorite characters, the funniest scenes, or what made it 'spooky' to you. It helps process any mild scares and turns it into a bonding experience. Know your audience: As the article wisely mentions, viewer discretion is so important. Movies like Gremlins or The Witches can be a bit intense for very young children, even if they're classics. Always preview or read reviews if you're unsure. We’ve found that even movies like Coraline or *Monster House*, while visually stunning and fantastic, can be a little creepy for toddlers. Don't forget the classics: Beyond the big names, gems like *Casper*, *Goosebumps*, and Halloweentown from the list bring so much nostalgic joy and are perfect for a wide age range. And It's the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown is an absolute must-watch for everyone, no matter how old you are, for that pure, wholesome Halloween spirit!
