We all get that feeling sometimes

2024/9/4 Edited to

... Read moreIt’s a strange paradox, isn't it? You can be surrounded by people, constantly busy with work, filming, or even going live, yet still feel that pang of loneliness. I've been there, and what I've learned is that 'lonely isn't being alone, it's the feeling that no one cares.' That quote truly resonates with me, especially when I feel like a 'popular loner' – knowing many, but feeling my circle is small and I'm often by myself. We often think if we just keep our schedules packed, we'll outrun the feeling. But for me, and perhaps for many of us, especially those with conditions like ADHD who might struggle with internal regulation, it can sometimes feel like just more noise, masking an underlying emptiness or boredom. It's not about the absence of people, but the absence of deep connection or feeling truly seen. So, how do we navigate this when it hits us? I've found that one powerful step is to embrace a bit of the 'loner' wisdom, as Albert Einstein put it: 'Be a loner. That gives you time to wonder... Make your life worth living.' This isn't about isolating yourself, but about using that time for self-reflection and purpose. What genuinely brings you joy? It could be a creative outlet, learning something new, or simply spending time in nature. For me, sometimes it's about shifting my focus from external validation to internal fulfillment. Reaching out to just one trusted friend, even for a quick chat, can also make a huge difference. Sometimes, just acknowledging the feeling without judgment is the first step. But what about when we see someone else struggling, or when we want to help a friend feel less alone? It's so important to remember that they might also be battling that 'no one cares' feeling, even if they seem outwardly busy or popular. Here are a few things I've learned that can truly make a difference: Listen Actively: Sometimes, people just need to be heard without judgment or advice. Ask open-ended questions like, 'How are you really doing?' and genuinely listen to their response. Extend a Low-Pressure Invitation: Instead of a big group outing, maybe a simple coffee, a walk in the park, or even just a video call. Let them know there's no pressure, just that you'd enjoy their company. Small Gestures of Care: A text message saying 'thinking of you,' sharing an article you think they'd like, or remembering a small detail about their life – these can be powerful reminders that someone does care. Validate Their Feelings: Instead of saying 'don't be silly,' try 'it sounds like you're going through a tough time, and that's completely understandable.' Validation can be incredibly comforting. Offer Practical Support: 'Can I bring you a meal?' or 'Would you like to tackle that errand together?' can be more impactful than just saying 'let me know if you need anything,' which often puts the burden on them. Loneliness is a universal human experience, but it doesn't have to define us. By understanding its nuances – that it's not about being alone but feeling uncared for – we can better equip ourselves and others to navigate it. Let's be kinder, listen more, and extend a hand, making sure no one feels truly alone.
