Laos is the champion of the cheapest travel, ASEAN.
The Department for International Trade Promotion (DITP) reports that the Lao People's Democratic Republic, or Lao PDR, is ranked by Time Out magazine as the country with the lowest cost of living for tourists in the ASEAN region, which makes Laos an outstanding destination for seekers of cultural experience, nature beauty and warm hospitality, all at an accessible price with an average daily cost of just £12 (THB 523), covering accommodation, food and domestic travel.

In popular cities like Luang Prabang and Vientiane, tourists can stay in the hostel for a starting price of just £3 (131 baht) per night, while in Wang Viang, the price is only £1.50 (65 baht). On the way food, such as grilled pork glutinous rice, is about 80 pence (35 baht), and cold Lao beer is available for less than £1 (44 baht).
Many attractions are free to visit or charge admission at a low rate, such as Kwangxi Falls, which includes a bear rescue center. There is only £2.30 (100 baht) for travel between the main cities. There is a pocket-friendly charge. Buses and vans usually have a fare of up to £4.50 (196 baht).

Writer and traveler Lola Méndez, who has spent more than five years exploring Southeast Asia, has described the Lao-China Railway as another convenient and cost-effective option. Second-class tickets from Vientiane to Wangweang cost only £6 ($261), while motorcycle rentals start at £4.70 ($205) per day, allowing travelers to explore areas outside the main route more freely and deeply.
Regional rankings and global recognition
Time Out also ranks Vietnam and Cambodia as the next most economical destinations, with an average daily cost of £15 (653 baht), followed by Malaysia / Indonesia and Thailand, which are £19 (827) and £24 (1,045 baht) respectively.
Laos' reputation as a "travel gem" has shone even more with global media recognition - whether it's CNN putting Laos on its list of 23 great destinations to visit, National Geographic named it one of the 25 amazing attractions to explore, or The British Telegraph, which ranks Laos among the top 20 special destinations to visit in 2023.
In addition, the Travel and Tour World website, based on Canadian financial platform HelloSafe, indicates that Laos is ranked as the most economical destination in the world for 2025 at an average daily cost of only $16.38 ($530).
Tourism continues to grow.
According to the Lao Press Conference, Culture and Tourism Ministry, in the first quarter of 2025, more than 1.2 million foreign visitors visited, up to 11% compared to the previous year, generating more than $426 million in revenue.
At the same time, domestic tourism continued to expand, with more than 1.4 million Lao tourists in the same period, rising to 98.6%, generating a total of more than $237 million.
In view, while the world is open to real travel experiences, Laos has proven that simplicity, value and cultural charm can be combined to become a more fascinating destination for travelers from all over the world.
