Cambodia Battle of Thailand for 1 Month: Getting not to yes! (Part 1 / 2)

1. Thailand is in a state of war, but many people do not accept it - "We are at war, but some don't admit it."

Since July 24, 2025, for more than a month, Cambodia and Thailand have clearly entered into an "all-round mixed war" that many did not expect. The war is a form of international war known as the "Total War" or the "Hybrid Warfare," as it is often called today, which is very different from the communist war, the guerrilla war, the civil war in Indochina or the genocide in Cambodia that is often familiar for the past 50 years.

Some Thai societies do not think that the country is in such a new state of war, so they have not prepared or done anything special to support this new situation in the first place, so that Thailand cannot create much fighting advantage in the first place and is currently unable to achieve peace as intended.

What determines an international war or an inclusive war? The Cambodian-Thai conflict was complete by its composition, such as

1.1) Both countries use a lot of military force in battle, both active and non-active, especially Cambodia. There are a lot of local or old Khmer Rouge soldiers, and both sides have used a lot of weapons, old and new, cheap or commercially available, such as landmines, drones, guided devices, or military technology, such as multi-caliber rockets (Cambodia), artillery, or satellite-pointed high-performance fighters procured from the United States, China, Russia, and many other countries, to attack each other along the border of several provinces, both across the border. The border took part of each other's territory, a number of prisoners of war emerged, and hundreds of thousands of people were evacuated from the battle area and there are currently displaced migrants in the area.

This Cambodian-Thai war is also fought in modern cyberspace. There is an attack on the bureaucratic online network. Fake news is not released every day. Importantly, a secret clip of a conversation between Thailand's prime minister and Cambodian Privy Council President Hun Sen resulted in the Thai prime minister's case and a pause of duty pending a court judgment.

There have been ongoing social attacks between some groups of citizens in the two countries, and checkpoints have been closed along the border, diplomatic relations have been downgraded and activities have been temporarily suspended across many borders, affecting international relations and many citizens on both sides.

Before the armistice was held on July 29 and there were 13 formal ceasefire agreements on August 7, two more were recently agreed: mine recovery and the suppression of transnational crime at the RBC Conference, but this "peace on a piece of paper" has not yet brought about real peace between the two countries today.

1.2) This war killed more than two thousand soldiers and people of both countries (according to US and many parties), especially Cambodia, which lost a lot of soldiers. This level of loss can be officially classified as an international war, even if the war was not declared, because more than 1,000 people were killed by the actions of national military forces across the border, according to the commonly used definition of international war.

1.3) The United Nations, by the Security Council (UNSC), also called an emergency meeting on July 25 under the theme "Threats to international peace and security," which is clearly considered a state of war, different from other topics in 2011 or 2008.

This time, Thailand and Cambodia attended the meeting in accordance with regulations. Thailand clarified that Cambodia was invaded and violated its sovereignty, causing a large number of Thai soldiers and civilians to be injured and killed (now nearly 300 in total). It was necessary to defend itself in accordance with Article 51 of the UN Charter. This first clear and active clarification made UNSC no clear resolution punishable by Thailand or by you and Cambodia as the Cambodian government expected.

Importantly, this war saw many countries intervene or involved in determining the direction of the conflict, as well as pressuring for a cessation of hostilities, hastily and without tightening ceasefire agreements were signed, all of which did not give Thailand much advantage compared to Cambodia, for example.

- Malaysia, as president of ASEAN and Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim in person, has urged Thailand to agree to a deal.

- The United States, with President Trump and Secretary of State Marco Rubio, was quickly involved without being very kind to Thailand, but focused on reducing China's role in Cambodia, including President Trump, personally wanted a peace prize.

- The People's Republic of China, with Foreign Minister Wang Yi, wants to protect Cambodia in the first place as Cambodia is a non-lethal retinue, but at the same time, China also wants to maintain normal relations with Thailand.

- France, by President Emanuel Macron, although not directly involved, wants to protect its colonial heritage and interests in the region, specifically supporting the United States against China and wanting investment and energy interests from Cambodia in particular.

ASEAN, as an observer of eight countries (the Interim Observer Team - IOT) and at the core of that solution, each member of the nation wants to protect their own interests in Cambodia, so it does not explicitly abuse or condemn or pressure Cambodia in its barbaric actions that have killed Thai citizens, and it can be said that ASEAN, under the leadership of its chairman, Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim, has also contributed to the weakening of ASEAN's unity and peace at the core of the region's security, economic and social cooperation.

But it's also good that once the IOT has examined the situation in the area, especially from the Thai border, the reality is hard to deny or ignore in the past, and like the Assistant Military Envoy, the Ottawa Mines Ban Treaty, it has contributed to pressure Cambodia to improve its stance on conflict resolution.

All of this reflects the competition for the world's strategic and much-intensified region today, as well as protecting the self-interest of each country in Cambodia as well as reminding Thailand that in the international political arena, do not ask for sincerity from anyone, do not think that any nation will come to Thailand's aid without hope.

And the important thing is not to think that Thailand is still particularly loved by any nation, even though we are more friendly than our enemies compared to many countries, and this Cambodian-Thai war has implicitly become a "proxy war" or Proxy War.
