The world's largest gas pipeline project.
Russia-China signed the "Energy of Siberia 2" project agreement, which Moscow dubbed the "largest project in the world" in the gas industry. The pipeline will transport gas from western Siberia through Mongolia to northern China. With an annual transmission power of 50 billion cubic meters, the section draped through Mongolia will be called "Soyuz Vostok" and open for sale to buyers in Mongolia.
The deal was announced by Gazprom CEO Alexey Miller after the Beijing meeting, attended by Russian President Vladimir Putin, Chinese President Xi Jinping and Mongolian President Uchna Kurelsukh, with Chinese leaders stressing the importance of "physical linkages" through cross-border infrastructure.
Despite the project having been under negotiation since 2006, with several routes and prices discussed, it is expected to be operational for more than 30 years upon completion, and will be an important mechanism for driving strategic cooperation between the three countries.
After the EU reduced energy imports from Russia under pressure from the US, Russia adjusted its energy strategy by turning its focus to the Asian market, with China becoming the largest buyer of gas through the pipeline. Currently, the "Energy of Siberia-1," activated in 2019, has already shipped more than 100 billion cubic meters of gas from eastern Siberia to China.
According to Miller, gas delivered to China and Mongolia will be cheaper than ever sold to Europe because of shorter transportation distances and significantly lower costs.
