Big Scrammer Army Base
The Guardian reports that large Scammers bases in Mianma, especially on the Thai-Mianma border such as KK Park, have more than doubled since the Mianma Army took power in 2021, with at least 27 currently found throughout the country.
KK Park, which five years ago was just an open field along the Umayi River in the city of Meyodi, has transformed into a 210-hectare complex with rigid security, surrounded by mountains and amenities ranging from hospitals, restaurants, banks to orderly luxury villas - looks like a tech city, but is actually the center of a multibillion-dollar online scam industry driven by human trafficking and violence.
Recent drone images recorded by The Guardian in August, reveal further construction in KK Park and other bases such as Tai Chang and Shwe Kokko, with Tai Chang having a new floating pier connecting the Thai side, while the roofs of several bases are equipped with satellite Internet receiver equipment to avoid the effects of power cuts, internet and cross-border gas by the Thai authorities.
Satellite images of Dongmei Park reveal tight protection systems, siege fences, checkpoints and surveillance towers, including luxury accommodation for "labor management teams," some of which were used as video call scenes tricking victims into believing they were talking to real investors.
Escapees from these bases were reportedly heavily tortured, some with permanent loss of organs or maiming, with a major rescue earlier this year helping some 7,000 victims, while Thai police estimate that up to 100,000 workers were detained.
At least 90 people from 11 countries across Asia and Africa are trapped in the base, according to the Trafficking Victims Assistance Organization, while analysts point out that the industry has become a "survival necessity" of the Mianma Army, which is dependent on income from border armed groups.
Experts warn that governments around the world are also underestimating the problem, and that it is likely that such a Scrammer base model will be extended to other countries such as Sri Lanka and Nigeria.
