Gen Z mob proposes transitional government leader
Sushila Karki, a 72-year-old former Nepal's first female judge, has been named by Gen Z Nepal as the best fit to lead the Transitional Federal Government, with over 5,000 younger generations attending online meetings across the country to find individuals who can lead the country through the political transition.
The move was sparked by a wave of anti-corrupt protests and social media bans. Despite the measure being subsequently repealed, discontent spread to violence across the country, resulting in the deaths of at least 30 people and the destruction of many government facilities.
Despite Mayor Balen Shah being watched as an early favorite of the online conference, he did not respond to contacts from the Proposal Initiative. Balen is a former rapper and structural engineer who turned himself into politics as an independent candidate. By winning the 2022 Kathmandu mayoral election without any party affiliation, he is known for his song "Balidan," which reflects the image of government corruption and failure, and has also played a prominent role on social media, especially Instagram, which he clearly uses as a platform to support the Gen Z Nepal group.
In addition to Karki, other key figures were named at the meeting, including Kulman Ghising, National Electricity Director, New Generation leader Sagar Dhakal, Tharan Mayor Harka Sampang and YouTuber "Random Nepali," who indicated that he would take the position if none accepted.
If Karki accepts the offer, she must meet the military commander and seek the approval of President Ram Chandra Paodel.
Karki began her tenure as an ad hoc Supreme Court justice in 2009 before being formally appointed a Supreme Court justice the following year, and in 2016 she became the first woman to hold the highest office in the nation's judicial body, was praised for her integrity, courage in judging cases, and played a key role in drafting the 2006 Constitution.
