US tech giants have spent more than $1.5 trillion investing in AI infrastructure in the UK.
Microsoft, Nvidia, Google, OpenAI, Salesforce and CoreWeave announced plans to invest a total of more than US $40 billion (1.26 trillion) to empower artificial intelligence (AI) capabilities in the UK, with the goal of creating a global technology hub.
Microsoft led the team with an investment budget of $30,000 million by 2028, $15,500 million ($4.91 billion) for infrastructure expansion, and another $15,100 million ($4.79 billion) for domestic operations, along with building the largest supercomputer in England with over 23,000 GPUs in partnership with British cloud company Nscale.
Nvidia announced a $15 billion ($4.76 billion) investment prepared to install 120,000 Blackwell GPU chips, marking the company's largest AI expansion in Europe.
Google spends $6,800 million (2.15 billion) opening a new data center in Waltham Cross to support AI services such as Google Cloud, Workspace and Search, with an expected to create over 8,000 jobs a year.
OpenAI launched the "Stargate UK" project in partnership with SoftBank, Oracle, Microsoft and Nscale, preparing to install 8,000 GPUs early next year; and has plans to expand to 31,000 in the future; the first project will be located at Cobalt Park, Newcastle.
Salesforce increased its investment budget in England to $6,000 million ($1.9 billion) from the original $4,000 million ($1.26 billion) by 2023 to expand services and support AI development.
While CoreWeave, a US-based cloud provider, announced an additional £1,500 million ($6.49 billion) in investment, including £2,500 million ($1.08 billion) in the UK to expand its data centres and AI infrastructure.
