UN cuts 20% of staff cars
The United Nations (UN) is preparing to reduce its core budget to $3,200 million next year with a plan to reduce at least 3,000 personnel from some 35,000 employees after facing major cuts from the U.S. government under President Donald Trump.
The cuts accounted for 15% of the core budget and nearly 19% of the number of jobs, excluding the impact on peace, humanitarian and public health agencies, which all rely primarily on U.S. funding.
UN Secretary General Antonio Gouterres tried to turn the crisis into an opportunity by moving forward with the reorganization of the organization through the "UN80" initiative aimed at reducing the redundancy of over 140 agencies and aligning the mission with the three pillars of UN principles: peace, human rights and development.
Meanwhile, the United States has gradually withdrawn from UN agencies such as the World Health Organization (WHO), the UNFPA Population Fund, UNESCO and the Human Rights Council, signaling that it will reduce its budget by more than 80% in 2026 from $1,500 million ($4.78 billion) to $300 million ($9.56 billion).
The impact is becoming apparent in many programs, such as the World Food Programme (WFP), that once relied on the US for half of its $9 billion budget by 2024, while UNHCR warns it may no longer be able to care for 11 million refugees.
According to Tom Fletcher, head of the UN's Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs, the world is entering an "era of indifference," revealing that the UN received only 19% of its required budget this year, down to 40% from the previous year, with the result that another 6 million children may fall out of the education system and another 2 million Afghans may not receive assisted food.
Fletcher says the crisis is not just financial, it reflects a challenge to the UN's legitimacy and confidence as an international organization.
