Zebra Cow! Global Research Painted Cows Reduce Insect Bites
A team of 11 Japanese researchers won the Ig Nobel Prize in Biology for an experiment that found that painting zebra stripes on a cow's body can significantly reduce the number of insect bites.
According to research published since 2019, painting white-black on Japanese black cattle reduces insect infestation by up to 50% compared to cows that are not painted or painted exclusively on black patterns. The pattern may be a new alternative to insect protection chemicals, which have a positive impact on animal health, the environment, and humans.
The Ig Nobel Prize is organized by Annals of Improbable Research, a U.S. humorous science magazine, to recognize research that "makes people laugh first and then think." This year, there have been honorees in 10 fields, including research on the pizza taste of lizards and the impact of foul shoes.
The Japanese team's findings also build on previous research in 2016, which found that infested flying insects often avoid white horses, with researchers from Hungary, Spain, Sweden and Switzerland winning the Ig Nobel Prize in Physics that year.
