The Italian government proposed a law banning the wearing of veils.
The Brothers of Italy party, the ruling party of Prime Minister Georgia Meloni, introduced a new bill to Parliament on Wednesday to ban the wearing of veils such as burqa (whole body veils including faces, with a mesh covering the eyes) and niqab (face veils that open only around the eyes) in public places across the country, including schools, universities, shops and offices, with the goal of solving the "cultural divide" linked to Islam, with violators subject to fines ranging from 300 to 3,000 euros (about 9,783-97,830 baht).
In addition to dress code matters, the bill adds financial transparency requirements for religious organizations that do not have agreements with the state, including all Islamic organizations, by requiring disclosure of funding sources and prohibiting receipt of funds from sources that may pose a threat to security.
The bill also proposes to increase penalties in forced marriage cases, by including religious compulsion, and to impose penalties for celibacy checks.
Previously, many European countries such as France, Belgium and Switzerland had also enacted laws banning the wearing of burqa in public.
