Minnesota Attorney General Keith Ellison issued a statement in response to a letter from more than 40 school board members calling on the state to adjust its sports policy to keep male athletes from women's sports teams, insisting that "putting a small number of transgender children in Minnesota in school sports does not cause anyone trouble, but separating them separately does hurt."
Ellison's statement came despite several high school female athletes in the state saying that having to compete with transgender athletes affected them greatly, and some took legal action to express their stance on the issue.
One of the plaintiffs gave an interview to Fox News Digital saying, "This has affected me more than ever before, it's not fair, and I hate that nobody does anything to change that a boy shouldn't take the girl's place on the team just because he can."
Another plaintiff vented his frustration, "It is not only disappointing but shocking that the electors stand by policies that allow men to compete with women, knowing that it is unsafe and unfair, that encouraging men to take over women's space in sports is not just neglecting rights, but blatantly destroying equality."
The Minnesota Department of Education is facing a deadline from the U.S. Department of Education on Friday to align its policy on transgender athletes with President Donald Trump's order signed in February to ban men from competing in female sports.
However, Minnesota was one of the first states to show a non-compliance stance with the order, with Ellison filing a lawsuit against the federal government and the Department of Justice, reiterating that "the exclusion constitutes a violation of Minnesota's human rights law, which has protected the right of transgender children to participate in various activities for decades."
Ellison also said, "I am also concerned about the cuts in education statements that the Trump administration has threatened to make to children across Minnesota, but this is already in court stage. Federal intimidation is a violation of the Constitution, state law, and Title IX (a U.S. law prohibiting gender discrimination in federally funded educational activities or programs). I will fight to prevent harmful cuts, stop bullying transgender children who just want to live in peace, and protect the rights and freedoms of all students in Minnesota."
