Nvidia launches US-made wafer chip Blackwell
Nvidia, the world's major chip manufacturing company, announced Friday (Oct. 17) that it could successfully manufacture the first batch of Blackwell wafers in the United States at TSMC's facility in Phoenix, Arizona, marking a milestone in domestic AI chip manufacturing amid a surge in demand for processing chips worldwide.
Nvidia founder and CEO Jensen Huang attended the launch ceremony with TSMC executives at the Phoenix facility, with the signing on the Blackwell wafer chip as a historic symbol of cooperation, with Huang stating, "This is the first time in modern American history that the world's most important chips have been manufactured in the U.S. by TSMC's most innovative factory."
The TSMC plant in Arizona will produce advanced chips with 2, 3 and 4 nm technologies, including the A16 chip, which is the centerpiece of AI, telecommunications and high-performance processing (HPC) systems, with the Blackwell wafer going through complex manufacturing processes before becoming a high-performance GPU for data centers, robotics and large AI applications.
This partnership not only strengthens the U.S. supply chain, but also enhances the advanced chip manufacturing industry to the country, reduces dependence on foreign manufacturing, and supports technological stability, according to Nvidia.
In addition, Nvidia plans to implement the company's AI, robotics, and digital twin technologies to design and run future U.S. manufacturing facilities to leverage manufacturing processes to become smarter and more efficient.
The success in U.S. production of Blackwell wafers marks a leap forward in the AI industry and reinforces America's role as a global technology leader.
