Read bootleg manga. Damage is 8.5 trillion yen a year.
The anti-piracy website organization ABJ revealed the first survey on reading manga and Japanese fiction through bootleg websites free of charge, which causes economic damage of 8.5 trillion yen a year, more than 12 times the value of the manga market in Japan.
Yomiuri Shimbun reports that a survey covering 913 pirated websites from 123 countries and regions around the world showed a total of more than 2,800 million visits in June, with users spending more than 700 million hours reading content. According to the data, ABJ calculated a free reading damage figure based on reading a tankobon that takes an average of 30 minutes and costs 500 yen (105 baht) per book per year. The damage figure is 8.5 trillion yen (1.78 trillion baht).
By country, Indonesia ranks first in bootleg manga reading damage, with damage of 9,230 million yen (1.93 billion), followed by Japan at 8,340 million yen (1.75 billion baht) and the United States at 7,910 million yen (1.66 billion baht), with damage from all three countries accounting for a third of the global total. The next are India in fourth place at 3,890 million yen (814 million baht) and Thailand in fifth place at 3,250 million yen (680 million baht).
The poll also reflects a worrying trend, particularly in Japan, where, despite ongoing repressive measures against piracy websites, the number of visits to bootleg websites located in the country, which still lack copyright regulations, continues to soar.
