3 Trump's legal claim against the BBC
US President Donald Trump prepares legal action against UK broadcaster BBC. From the case of the documentary programme Panorama, a montage of his speeches was made before the January 6, 2021 riots invaded the US Parliament, creating footage that he was stirring a group of supporters to move the procession to Parliament House.
Trump's legal team sent the book to the BBC on Sunday, filing three claims: 1) withdrawing the documentary from publishing, 2) issuing a public apology statement, and 3) compensating for the reputational and financial damage caused, along with stating that if the BBC does not act on all the claims by November 14, 2025, it will be sued for no less than US $1,000 million (3.24 billion) in damages.
The documentary features a montage of clips of Trump's speech, omitting the wording in which he called for supporters to "march peacefully and patriotically," which Trump's legal team saw as misrepresenting the facts, and netted defamation by Florida state law.
The incident led to the resignation of the BBC's chief executive as the station came out admitting it was a "decision mistake" but denying allegations of systemic bias against the presentation of the news.
Trump's legal team also accused the BBC of intentionally interfering in the U.S. election, opting to publish the documentary in the run-up to the November 2024 election.
