Disappointed U.S.
Dec 13, 2025, State Department Secretary Si Sak Ket Kaew made a statement on the progress of the Thai-Cambodian border, expressing his "disappointment" at President Donald Trump's message posted on the Truth Social platform stating that the Thai military stepped on a landmine was a "roadside bombing," or a street accident, which the Thai side saw as inconsistent with the facts and affected the feelings of the Thai people.
The Foreign Guard thanked Trump for expressing concern and hope for peace, but reiterated that peace must come from both sides, not one, pointing out that some of the statements in the post may reflect a misunderstanding or have received information from an incorrect source.
The main point that Thailand disagrees with is the allegations of an "accident." The Thai military stepped on the landmine. The Thai side confirmed that the landmine was new to Cambodia, not a coincidence, and seven new landmines were confirmed by the ASEAN Observer Corps (AOT), not a unilateral Thai statement. On the same day, a BM-21 rocket was fired at a civilian area in Sisaket province, which Thailand saw as an act of intent, not an accident.
Regarding the Thai response, Si Sak stated that the Thai operation was proportionate and retaliatory to Cambodia's actions, not beyond the cause, and that Thailand remained friendly to key U.S. countries and allies. Thailand and the United States have always shared security challenges and are disappointed that the wording affects feelings and relationships.
On the issue of fact-checking, Thailand has no problem with the use of satellites or the deployment of AOT to determine the facts, but requests a review of landmines along with Thailand because Thailand has called for a review panel when attending the Conference of the Parties to the Ottawa Convention in Geneva and has ready evidence to present.
Mr. Si Sak also pointed out that the threat along the border is not limited to military operations, but to transnational crime issues such as human trafficking and online squam, which Thailand has implemented and will hold a ministerial meeting to create an online squam partnership on December 17.
Another concern is the closure of Cambodia's checkpoint, causing some 6,000-7,000 Thais at Poipet checkpoint to fail to return. Thailand views the suspension of cross-border travel in this way as a violation of human rights and international humanitarian law because it is humanitarian, not directly related to hostilities.
Asked about the proposal for a ceasefire, Mr Si Sak pointed out that a ceasefire must be due to the readiness of both sides, not to unilateral declarations or external desires; the details of a ceasefire must be discussed between the militaries of the two countries in order to make it feasible and sustainable; a ceasefire declared without readiness may only be a diplomatic tool to create an advantage.
Finally, Mr. Si Sak said that Thailand is ready to cooperate with AOT and attend a special meeting of ASEAN foreign ministers on December 16 to clarify the facts and explain Thailand's view of the incident, reiterating that the issue should be resolved between Thailand and Cambodia itself, under the support of fellow countries and international organizations, to achieve lasting peace and protection for both peoples.
