Wow, if you're looking for a truly breathtaking natural wonder in Arkansas, you absolutely have to visit Cedar Falls at Petit Jean State Park! I recently had the incredible opportunity to hike this trail, and let me tell you, it exceeded all my expectations. It's not just a hike; it's an immersive experience into the heart of Arkansas's stunning wilderness. When I first planned my trip, I knew I wanted to do some hiking, and Cedar Falls kept coming up. The description of a 'beautiful 2-mile out and back hike with 397ft of elevation gain' sounded appealing, but it doesn't even begin to capture the magic. The trailhead, easily accessible from the park's main loop road, marks the start of the Cedar Falls Trail, also known as Trail 7. There's ample parking, which is always a relief, especially on a busy weekend. The trail itself is well-maintained but definitely rugged in places, adding to the adventure! It's rated as moderately strenuous, and after completing it, I completely agree. The 397 feet of elevation gain is mostly concentrated on the return trip, which means you're going downhill to the falls – making the descent a joyful anticipation – and then climbing back up. I found myself navigating rocky sections, tree roots, and a few slightly steep inclines. Good hiking shoes with ankle support are absolutely essential here; I saw a few people struggling in regular sneakers, and I knew they weren't having the best time. As you descend into the canyon, the air gets cooler, and the sounds of the falls become more pronounced. It's truly a sensory experience. The forest canopy provides wonderful shade, which is a blessing, especially during warmer months. I went in the spring, and everything was so lush and green, with wildflowers peeking out here and there. The ultimate reward, of course, is reaching the base of Cedar Falls. Standing there, gazing up at the water cascading 95 feet down a sheer cliff face into a serene pool below, was simply awe-inspiring. It’s one of Arkansas's tallest and most spectacular waterfalls, and photos just don't do it justice. You really have to experience it for yourself. I spent a good amount of time just soaking in the view, taking photos, and enjoying a snack I packed. There are plenty of rocks to sit on, perfect for a little rest before the uphill climb back. My top tip for anyone planning this hike: bring plenty of water! Even though it's only 2 miles round trip, the elevation change and the effort required mean you'll be thirsty. Also, consider packing a light lunch or some snacks to enjoy by the falls. And please, remember to pack out everything you pack in – let's keep this beautiful place pristine for everyone. The hike back up, as expected, was more challenging, but knowing what awaited me at the top (my car and a cold drink!) kept me motivated. It's a fantastic workout and a truly rewarding experience. Whether you're an avid hiker or just looking for a memorable outdoor adventure, the Cedar Falls Trail at Petit Jean State Park should be at the very top of your list. It's a quintessential Arkansas experience that I can't recommend enough!
