This is a giant Koi pond with a number of various Koi. Koi fish are a colorful, ornamental versions of the common carp. Though carp domestication is believed to have begun in China as far back as the 4th century, modern Japanese koi are believed to date back to early 19th-century Japan where wild, colorful carp were caught, kept and bred by rice farmers. There are now dozens of different color varieties of koi. They can grow up to 3 feet long and have an average lifespan of 40 years. A common misconception is that koi are large goldfish; although koi and goldfish are both domesticated from carp, they are distinct species.

I've even seen some of my koi with hints of green in their scales, especially when the light hits them just right, which adds another dimension to the already diverse mix of orange, white, and black. It’s amazing how different each koi is, even within the same pond.
