This dresser was trashed. Let’s save it!

So you've got an old dresser that's seen better days, right? I know the feeling! Instead of tossing it, I've found that a little TLC can transform it into a real showstopper. Before diving into the fun part, proper prep is key. I always start by emptying the drawers, removing all hardware (handles, knobs, anything detachable), and giving the entire dresser a thorough cleaning. A good scrub with a degreaser ensures any grime or old polish is gone. Sometimes, a light sanding is needed, especially if there are flaky bits or a super glossy finish. For my last project, I just did a quick scuff sand to help the paint adhere better. This is where your creativity shines! Think about the overall look you want. Are you going for vintage chic, modern farmhouse, or something totally unique? For my dresser, I picked a floral Dixie Belle decoupage paper that complemented the room's aesthetic. Consider where the paper will go – just the drawer fronts, or maybe a panel on the side? And what color Terra Clay Paint will make it pop? I usually grab a few sample pots to test colors before committing. Once prepped and planned, let's get to the magic! If you're painting, apply your first coat of Dixie Belle Terra Clay Paint. I love how easily it covers; often, one coat is enough, but two give a richer, deeper color. Let it dry completely. Then, for the decoupage, trim your rice paper to size, making sure it fits perfectly where you want it. Apply a thin, even coat of Dixie Belle Clear Coat (or another decoupage medium) to the surface where the paper will go. Carefully lay the rice paper over it. This is the delicate part! I like to use a piece of plastic wrap or my fingers, gently smoothing from the center outwards to push out any air bubbles or wrinkles. The rice paper is super forgiving because it's so thin, which makes it great for beginners like me. Once it's perfectly positioned, apply another thin layer of Clear Coat over the top of the paper to seal it in. This protects the design and blends it seamlessly with the painted surface. After everything is dry, you can add more coats of Clear Coat for extra durability, especially if it's a high-traffic piece. I usually do 2-3 coats, allowing adequate drying time between each. This ensures your beautiful revamp stands up to daily use. Sometimes, I even add new hardware – it’s like giving the dresser new jewelry!
