So many of you asked about the process behind my 'Bibbidi Bobbidi Blue' Cinderella desk makeover, and I'm so excited to share more! It truly was a labor of love, but completely worth it. If you're dreaming of your own fairy tale furniture, here’s a peek into how I brought this magical transformation to life. First things first, preparation is key! My old desk was pretty neglected, so I started by giving it a thorough cleaning. I used a good degreaser to remove any grime and then a light sanding to rough up the surface. This step is super important for paint adhesion – you don't want your beautiful new paint chipping off! I used a fine-grit sandpaper, just enough to create a little 'tooth' for the primer. Next up was priming. I can't stress this enough: don't skip the primer, especially if you're going from a dark wood to a light color like my Cinderella blue! I applied two thin coats of a good quality, water-based primer, letting each coat dry completely in between. This not only ensures better coverage for your topcoat but also helps seal in any old stains. Now for the fun part: picking the perfect 'Cinderella blue'! This was probably the hardest decision, as there are so many gorgeous shades out of there. I wanted something whimsical but also sophisticated, not too childish. I ended up going with a satin finish paint, as I find it durable and easy to clean, and it gives a lovely soft sheen without being too glossy. I applied several thin coats, rather than one thick one, using a good quality brush for the details and a small foam roller for the larger flat surfaces to minimize brush strokes. This gives such a professional, smooth finish. Once the blue was dry, I considered adding some subtle distressing to give it an aged, enchanted look, but I decided against it for this piece, wanting a crisp, fresh fairy tale vibe. Instead, I focused on some new hardware. The original knobs were so plain, so I replaced them with some beautiful glass-look pulls that really catch the light, adding that final touch of magic and sparkle. It’s amazing how new hardware can completely change the look of a piece! My biggest tip for anyone attempting a furniture makeover like this? Take your time! Don't rush the drying times between coats. Patience truly pays off in the end. And don't be afraid to experiment with colors and finishes. This desk now feels like it belongs in a princess's chamber, and every time I sit down to work, I feel a little bit of that magic. It reminds me that with a little imagination and elbow grease, you can turn anything 'sad and forgotten' into something truly fabulous!
