Sometimes you sand it all off and start again!
The original plan? A custom cedar chest with a paper design my client picked out.
I tried. I really, truly did. But every time I looked at it, it just wasn't speaking to me at all. After weeks of staring at it and feeling completely uninspired, I decided it wasn’t worth forcing a design that didn't feel right.
So, I sanded it all off and started fresh.
This time, I went with a soft, faded, textured finish using Terra Clay Paint. To give it that perfect focal point, I added a gorgeous Woodubend moulding right front and center. The result? Absolutely stunning, and exactly what this piece was meant to be.
Sometimes you just have to trust your gut and start over. After all, it’s just paint.

In the world of furniture restoration and customization, there are times when the initial vision just doesn’t pan out as expected. I’ve learned firsthand that it’s perfectly fine—and often necessary—to completely sand a piece down and start again. With the cedar chest example, sticking to a design that didn’t inspire felt more like a chore than a craft. Choosing to start fresh allowed me to tap into a more genuine creative flow. Using Terra Clay Paint created a soft, faded finish that brought texture and subtle character to the chest. The addition of a Woodubend moulding added an elegant focal point, proving that sometimes the simplest elements can make the most impact. This experience reminds me that creativity isn’t always about pushing forward stubbornly; it’s about listening to your instincts. Sometimes, the best results come from letting go of preconceived plans and embracing new ideas. If you’re working on a project and feeling stuck or uninspired, consider sanding down that piece and giving yourself permission to rethink and redesign. It’s just paint, after all, and the freedom to try again can lead to unexpectedly beautiful results. For those who enjoy DIY furniture projects or refinishing, experimenting with different paint types and decorative mouldings can also open up new possibilities. Look for products like Terra Clay Paint for natural, matte finishes that add softness without gloss. Woodubend mouldings are flexible and easy to customize, perfect for adding unique accents to your projects. Ultimately, every piece you revive or create carries your personal touch. Don’t fear starting over—embrace it as part of the creative journey. Have you ever had to completely scrap or redo a project mid-way? It’s a shared experience that often results in growth, better designs, and a lot more satisfaction in the finished piece.
