Hoyas Plant Rescue

... Read moreAfter rescuing my Hoyas and getting them settled, I learned so much about providing the best care, especially for varieties like Hoya Australis! If you're wondering how to keep your Hoya Australis thriving after a fresh start – or even if it just needs some TLC – here are my go-to care tips that I wish I knew earlier. When I moved my Hoyas from dirt to Pon, the cleaning process was crucial. Just like the initial dirt removal, making sure all old soil is gone prevents future issues. And yes, that insecticide spray from quarantine was a lifesaver! For Hoya Australis, they really appreciate a well-draining, airy medium. Pon is fantastic because it helps prevent overwatering, which is a common killer for many Hoyas, including the Australis. After their initial two-week quarantine, and even after moving them to water jars, I kept a close eye on them. This vigilance is key for any Hoya plant care. Hoya Australis loves bright, indirect light. Think of a spot near a window that gets plenty of light but no harsh, direct sun. Too much direct sun can scorch their beautiful leaves, while too little can lead to leggy growth and fewer blooms. I found that a good east-facing window is often perfect, or a few feet back from a south or west-facing one. Watering in Pon is a bit different from soil. With Pon, you often water when the reservoir is empty or almost empty, allowing a slight dry period between refills. This semi-hydroponic setup truly mimics what many Hoyas, like the Australis, enjoy – consistent moisture without being waterlogged. For those still in soil, let the top inch or two dry out completely before watering thoroughly. Remember, when I propagated them in water jars, I made sure to change the water regularly to keep it fresh and prevent bacterial growth. This applies even when transitioning to Pon; clean roots are happy roots! Humidity is another big factor for Hoya Australis plant care. They appreciate moderate to high humidity, around 50-70%. If your home is dry, especially in winter, consider a pebble tray or a humidifier nearby. This helps them unfurl new leaves beautifully and can encourage those lovely Hoya blooms we all adore. Don't forget to periodically check for pests even after quarantine; scale, mealybugs, and spider mites can sometimes sneak in. Regular leaf wipes and gentle inspections are part of my routine Hoya plant care. Overall, giving your Hoya Australis a fresh start, whether it's repotting, moving to Pon, or just a general health check-up, is a rewarding process. Patience is key, and observing your plant for its unique needs will lead to a happy, flourishing Hoya.

how to rescue a plant with root rot!
Root rot is one of the most common houseplant problems you’ll face when keeping plants. It occurs when the soil stays moist for too long around a plant’s roots, not allowing for air circulation which then leads to rot that spreads to the rest of the plant. However, this disease does not necessarily
