Learning to play the piano

Now the snow’s melting, I might as well pick up a new hobby before my summer trip 😊

2024/3/11 Edited to

... Read moreThe snow's melting and I'm feeling that urge to pick up a new hobby before my summer travels kick in! This year, I've decided to finally tackle something I've always dreamed of: learning to play the piano. It feels like the perfect way to unwind and challenge myself creatively. If you're like me, a total beginner wondering where to even start, I've been doing some digging and wanted to share my initial findings and personal tips! Honestly, the idea of learning piano seemed super daunting at first. I pictured expensive lessons and hours of tedious scales. But after some research, I realized there are so many amazing resources out there, especially for free! My main goal was to find the best free piano apps for beginners that could help me get started without a huge financial commitment. One app that immediately caught my eye was 'Simply Piano' (they have a decent free trial and some free lessons, which is great for testing the waters!). It’s incredibly user-friendly and turns learning into a game, which keeps me motivated. Another one I've been exploring is 'Pianote' – while it has premium features, their free YouTube content and some introductory lessons are fantastic for understanding basic techniques. And for pure virtual keyboard practice, 'Perfect Piano' is a simple, free app that lets you play around with notes and chords on your phone or tablet. These apps are truly game-changers for someone like me who's trying to learn how to learn piano by yourself. Beyond apps, I've been looking into easy piano lessons you can find online. YouTube is a goldmine! I've been following channels that break down basic chords and simple melodies. Starting with simple tunes like 'Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star' or even just learning C, G, and F chords has been incredibly rewarding. It’s all about building muscle memory and understanding the fundamental structure of music. Here are a few tips for piano beginners that I've gathered and am trying to stick to: Start Small & Be Patient: Don't expect to play Beethoven overnight! Focus on mastering one small thing at a time. Consistency is Key: Even 15-20 minutes a day is better than one long session a week. Building a habit is crucial. Listen Actively: Pay attention to the music you love. Try to pick out melodies or bass lines. This helps train your ear. Understand Basic Theory: You don't need to be a musicologist, but knowing what a major chord is or how a scale works surprisingly helps unlock so much. Don't Fear Mistakes: They're part of the learning process! Embrace them and learn from them. Find Your Motivation: For me, it's the thought of playing my favorite songs one day. For others, it might be playing for family or simply the joy of making music. I'm also keeping an eye out for easy piano sheet music for popular songs. Once I get the hang of basic chords, I'd love to try playing something like 'Let Me Love You Chords Teddy Swims' or even simpler versions of movie themes. There are also fun piano games for kids that can actually be pretty engaging for adults too, just to get a feel for the keys in a low-pressure way. This journey of learning piano is just beginning, and I'm excited to see where it takes me. It's a wonderful feeling to pick up a new skill, especially one that brings so much joy. If you're thinking about it, I say go for it! Let me know if you have any favorite beginner tips or app recommendations!
