Arrested for resting
1898 mugshot of a woman identified as Goldie Williams who was unlawfully arrested under Jim Crow-era vagrancy laws.
These laws called “Black Codes," criminalized unemployment and homelessness for African Americans to force them into low-wage labor. The laws allowed for the arrest of black individuals for "idleness," leading directly to convictions, fines, and forced labor through convict leasing, effectively re-enslaving many.
Goldie Williams defiantly refused to unfold her arms & made a face in the mugshot. 💪🏽🖤
