Lou Swarz was born Lucille Henrietta Schwartz in St. Louis, Mo in 1897. She was a brilliant orator known for her "One Woman Shows” featuring monologues of historical African Americans. She acted as characters like Hattie Tyson from Zora Neale Hurston's novel Jonah's Gourd Vine. She also played a French mademoiselle, a gypsy fortune teller, Phillis Wheatley, and Sojourner Truth. She became well known nationally
and performed at the 1939 World's Fair and for Eleanor Roosevelt at the summer white house.
Swarz appeared in the 1945 musical short “Big Timers” with Stepin Fetchit & Francine Everett. She taught theatre & beauty and during the 1930’s was dean of Herman Dreer’s Douglas University - School of Expression & Theater. She was a newspaper editor, sports columnist, a radio host & created many clubs & organizations.
