... Read moreOh my goodness, you guys! If you're planning a trip to the Audubon Zoo in New Orleans, you absolutely CANNOT miss seeing the incredible Rothschild giraffes! I recently visited, and honestly, it was one of the highlights of my entire day. There's just something so majestic about these gentle giants. When I first planned my visit, I knew seeing the giraffes was high on my list. They're such iconic animals, and the Audubon Zoo is home to the stunning Rothschild giraffes, one of the most endangered subspecies. It makes seeing them even more special, knowing the conservation efforts behind their presence there. Walking up to their habitat, you can't help but feel a sense of awe. Their long necks crane gracefully over the enclosures, nibbling on leaves, and sometimes, if you're lucky like I was, you'll see them interacting with each other – a truly heartwarming sight. I was completely captivated watching them move with such elegance. I found their habitat to be quite spacious, allowing them plenty of room to roam, which is always reassuring to see. What I particularly loved were the great viewing spots, often with elevated platforms that give you a fantastic eye-level perspective. This really helps you appreciate their immense height and unique coat patterns, making for some truly unforgettable photos. I spent a good amount of time just observing their calm demeanor. It’s a peaceful break from the hustle and bustle of some of the more active exhibits. Don't rush this part of your visit; take a moment to soak it all in. A little tip for your visit: definitely check the zoo's daily schedule when you arrive! Sometimes they have keeper talks or even feeding demonstrations at the giraffe habitat. I wasn't able to catch one on my particular trip, but I've heard from friends that it’s an amazing opportunity to learn more about these incredible creatures directly from the experts and see them up close during feeding time. Imagine seeing those long, purple tongues! It's an experience that adds so much more depth to your encounter. Also, if you're aiming for a less crowded viewing, try to visit early in the morning right after the zoo opens or later in the afternoon before closing. The giraffes tend to be more active during these cooler parts of the day too! Beyond the giraffes, the Audubon Zoo itself is a fantastic destination for a family day out or just a fun afternoon in New Orleans. But seriously, make a point to spend some quality time with the Rothschild giraffes. They are truly magnificent, and their presence at the zoo is a wonderful reminder of the beauty of wildlife and the importance of conservation. It’s an experience that stays with you long after you’ve left, leaving you with indelible memories of their gentle grace and towering presence. Highly, highly recommend adding this to your NOLA itinerary! You won't regret meeting these incredible creatures.
