3 important realities of coming back from injury

3 Important Realities of coming back from a sports injury

as a strength athlete, sports nutrition coach, and mom of 2 boys 3 and under

☝️Every sport you decide to participate in comes with inherent risk, and it’s up to you to navigate the risk to rewards ratios in the name of performance.

Whatever athletic endeavor you choose to commit to, it’s important to understand that pushing the limits of the human capacity, of the body, has associated risks to it. Consider these risks, and make sure to have a plan in place on how to navigate them.

💕 Your intuition will tell you when you’ve overdone it, it’s important to not be an a**hole and listen to it.

As much as I love and thrive off of evidence-based ideologies, I simultaneously do believe that your body is an integrative communication system. It will send you signals and signs if you’re overdoing it.

🎶 Your body is resilient and smart, it can come back from most injuries if rehabilitated properly.

I’ve slipped two discs in my lower back, dealt on and off with tennis elbow (lateral epicondylitis), and dislocated my collarbone and rib. I’ve learned that with proper programming, commitment to rehabilitative practices, and a sprinkle of patience, the body can heal and perform just as optimally as before.

... Read moreRecovering from a sports injury is a multidimensional journey that emphasizes not only physical healing but also mental resilience and strategic planning. Every sport inherently carries risks, and recognizing these risks early empowers athletes to approach their recovery with a balanced mindset. It’s crucial to acknowledge that the body operates as a sophisticated communication system; subtle signs such as persistent pain or unusual fatigue serve as important indicators that you may be overextending yourself during recovery. Listening attentively to these signals helps prevent setbacks and enhances long-term healing. Rehabilitation tailored to the specific injury is vital. Often, this involves a comprehensive approach combining physical therapy, nutritional support, and gradual reintroduction of activity. Evidence shows that with structured programming and dedication, the body is capable of bouncing back from various injuries—including those as serious as slipped discs or dislocated joints, as highlighted in personal experiences from strength and sports nutrition perspectives. Patience plays a key role here; rushing the process may lead to re-injury or chronic issues. Additionally, cultivating a supportive environment—whether through healthcare professionals, coaches, or community encouragement—bolsters motivation and adherence to rehabilitation routines. Psychological readiness is equally important; embracing the recovery process without frustration allows for realistic goal-setting. Ultimately, appreciating your body's resilience, respecting its limits, and committing to thoughtful rehabilitative practices pave the way for returning to peak performance safely and effectively.
