Architecture Photography

Hey Im Thomas! I film and photograph real estate properties for a living. Its been my only source of income for nearly the last 8 years. I've photographed and filmed probably over 4500 properties. I stopped counting a few years ago.

... Read moreHaving spent nearly a decade behind the lens, capturing over 4500 properties, I've learned a thing or two about what makes an architectural photograph truly stand out. It's not just about pointing and shooting; it's about seeing the building, understanding its lines, and harnessing the environment. For anyone diving into architecture photography, whether for professional assignments or personal passion, here are some insights I’ve gathered on how to photograph architecture effectively. One of the first things to consider is composition. Buildings are often geometric marvels, so pay close attention to leading lines, symmetry, and repeating patterns. Use a wide-angle lens to capture the grandeur, but don't forget a telephoto for isolating interesting details or textured facades. A sturdy tripod is non-negotiable for sharp images, especially in lower light, and for maintaining precise vertical and horizontal lines – crucial in architectural shots. Always try to keep your camera level to avoid converging verticals, which can make buildings look like they're falling backward. If you’re shooting from a low angle, a tilt-shift lens can be a game-changer, or you can correct it in post-production. Now, let's talk about the magic ingredient: light. Light and shadow architecture examples abound in my portfolio. I've seen how the same building can look dramatically different depending on the time of day and weather. Strong, directional light, like that from a low sun, can create dramatic shadows that emphasize a building's form and three-dimensionality. These contrasts add depth and interest, making a flat facade come alive. Conversely, an overcast day offers soft, diffused light that minimizes harsh shadows, perfect for highlighting intricate details and textures without distraction. Experiment with both to see how they transform your subject. My absolute favorite time to shoot is during the golden hour architecture photography. This period, shortly after sunrise or before sunset, provides a warm, soft, and often magical glow that can elevate any structure. The low angle of the sun casts long, raking shadows that define textures and add a sense of drama and grandeur. The warm hues beautifully complement many building materials, from brick and stone to glass and steel. To make the most of the golden hour, plan your shoot carefully. Scout the location beforehand to understand how the light will hit the building from different angles. Arrive early to set up and be ready for that perfect window of light, which often lasts surprisingly briefly. Pay attention to your white balance to ensure those beautiful warm tones are accurately captured. Sometimes, embracing the blue hour – the twilight period just before sunrise or after sunset – can also yield stunning, moody shots with a distinctly urban feel, especially when city lights begin to twinkle. Ultimately, architecture photography is about telling a story about the structure, its environment, and its purpose. It's about patience, observation, and a willingness to revisit locations multiple times until the light is just right. Don't be afraid to experiment with different perspectives, from ground level to higher vantage points, to find the most compelling narrative. Every building has a unique character, and it’s our job as photographers to reveal it.
