11/22/63 - Stephen King

⭐️ RATING: 5/5!!!

11/22/63 is a thriller by Stephen King that *literally* had me in a chokehold the entire time I read it!! Fair warning - it’s a loooonngg book, but once you get into it you won’t want to put it down. I think it took me 2-3 weeks to get through all 849 pages. I am newly into reading so this was intimidating to me at first but so glad I tackled it

ANYWAYS, Jake is a teacher who suddenly has the ability to go back in time thanks to a friend of his who discovered a portal in his diner. Every time this portal is used, the traveler goes back to the same day in time, September 9, 1958. When the traveler leaves the portal to back to present day, only 2 minutes will have passed in the present. If the traveler goes back into the portal, everything is reset and they again go back to September 9, 1958

Long story short (literally), Jake goes back in time to try to stop the assassination of JFK (11/22/63) but runs into issues as the past does not want to be changed

There’s also friendship and love and alllll the things in this book and while I read it as fast as I possibly could, I recommend taking your time to soak it all in and enjoy 🥹

... Read moreAfter absolutely devouring Stephen King's 11/22/63, I wanted to share a bit more about what makes this novel so incredibly compelling, especially for anyone searching for a truly unique time travel story with a historical twist. The core premise, preventing JFK's assassination, sounds straightforward, but King masterfully weaves in so many layers that make it far more than just a simple mission. What truly fascinated me was the way the past itself seems to fight back against Jake's attempts to alter it. It's not just about getting the details right; it's almost as if the fabric of time resists change with subtle, and sometimes not-so-subtle, obstacles. Small events cascade into larger issues, forcing Jake to constantly adapt and question if he's doing more harm than good. This 'butterfly effect' is explored so brilliantly, adding a profound depth to the narrative and ensuring there are genuine twists at every turn, keeping you guessing about the ultimate outcome. It really makes you ponder the ethical implications of messing with history – something I found myself thinking about long after I'd finished the last page. The time travel mechanism itself is also quite unique. Imagine stumbling upon a portal in a diner that always takes you back to the exact same moment: September 9, 1958. Every single time. And no matter how long you spend in the past, only two minutes pass in the present. This fixed entry point creates a fascinating constraint for Jake, as he has to live through the years leading up to 1963 repeatedly if he makes a mistake. This 'reset' feature, where any re-entry wipes out previous changes, means the stakes are incredibly high with each attempt. It’s a clever device that heightens the tension and keeps the plot moving at a relentless pace. For those of you, like me, who might be a bit intimidated by its 800+ pages, don't be! As someone who's relatively new to extensive reading, I found that once I got past the initial setup, I truly couldn't put it down. My best advice for tackling such a hefty tome? Set small reading goals each day, find a cozy spot, and let yourself get completely lost in the world King creates. The detail and character development are so rich that the pages just fly by. You'll find yourself genuinely invested in Jake's life in the past, not just his mission. This isn't just a book; it's an experience, a full immersion into another era and a thrilling 'what if' scenario. This book truly earns its 5/5 rating in my honest book review because it delivers on every front: a gripping plot, historical richness, compelling characters, and a thought-provoking exploration of fate versus free will. If you're looking for a novel that combines historical fiction, a thrilling assassination attempt plot summary, and brilliant time travel elements, then 11/22/63 is an absolute must-read. It’s more than just a story about stopping JFK; it’s about the human connection, the choices we make, and the unforeseen consequences that ripple through time.
