I seriously feel like I have brainrot from SM

I know that everyone says that you should install apps to limit screen time, etc. but it feels like I can’t stop. I hate YT shorts and Instagram reels but I’m still stuck scrolling on them. I also have ADHD which makes it worse for me as I get addicted easily. I miss when I could sit through a full length video, because now I just watch videos and get the urge to click away because I feel like I’m being unproductive.

My attention span has just taken a hit and I don’t know what to do. I can feel myself getting more anxious the more I do things that exceed my attention span.

It feels like I just need to quit cold turkey. I’ve already deleted tiktok which has helped a ton, but I wish Instagram and Youtube had the option to disable short videos. Is anyone else feel related?

... Read moreIt's so real, that feeling of 'brainrot' from endless scrolling. Like you, I've been stuck in that loop, feeling my attention span shrink and missing the days I could just *focus*. But after hitting a low point, I realized I needed a strategy to not just quit, but to truly 'unrot' my brain and start earning my screen time back. It's not about cutting it out completely for most of us, but about making it intentional and valuable. One of the first things I tried, inspired by that idea of a 'Clean Girl Routine' I saw in an image, was to create designated "no-screen zones" and times. My bedroom, especially an hour before bed, became a phone-free sanctuary. Instead of scrolling, I started picking up a book (just like that peaceful image with the cat and laptop, but I focused on the book!). Even 10-15 minutes of reading before sleep made a huge difference to my mind, helping me wind down instead of revving up with short-form content. This small shift was key to breaking the automatic reach for my phone. Another game-changer was actively trying to replace short, dopamine-hit content with longer, more engaging activities. Instead of instinctively opening YouTube Shorts, I'd put on a podcast while doing chores, or even try watching a documentary – breaking it into smaller chunks if my attention wavered at first. It felt like training a muscle; the more I practiced engaging with sustained content, the easier it became. I also found that picking up old hobbies, like sketching or puzzles, really helped fill the void and gave me a sense of accomplishment that endless scrolling never could. That calm, focused feeling you see in the image, maybe with a pet nearby, is totally achievable without a screen dominating your view. I also got really strict with app notification settings. Muting almost everything and only allowing calls from important contacts drastically reduced the urge to constantly check my phone. For apps I do use, like Instagram, I started setting daily timers through my phone's settings. When the timer goes off, I try to actually put the phone down, no matter what. It’s hard at first, but with consistency, it helps you become aware of how much time you're actually spending and regain control. The goal is to shift from passively consuming whatever algorithm is thrown at you, to actively choosing what you engage with. Think of it as investing your precious attention. Is this short video truly adding value, or is it just another fleeting distraction? By being more mindful and setting boundaries, I've slowly started to feel more present, less anxious, and yes, even like my brain is 'unrotting.' It's a continuous process, but every small step towards earning back your screen time makes a difference. If you're struggling, try picking one small change this week and see how it feels! You're not alone in this battle against brain fog, and reclaiming your focus is totally possible.

I try to have the “clean girl” routine but school and work makes it hard.

Yes, reels and shorts are like my biggest downfall when it comes to social medias because I will sit in doomscroll for hours and honestly what does help me is setting timers on my phone and then as soon as the timer is over, throwing my phone and finding something better to do
