I have had this problem for a few years now where I can't get myself to even start my tasks for school without having to mentally prepare for like 45 minutes.
Even after I start my work, I write 3 words to 1 sentence max then quickly get distracted and go on my phone and scroll for another hour.
The tasks that should take me 1 hour, take me 4 hours to complete.
I've tried locking my phone so that I can stop myself from getting distracted, but this didn't help because instead of going on my phone I just sit and do nothing instead. Literally nothing. I just sit and keep thinking about random things until I realise that I should be getting on with the work.
I had to complete some course work that had to be 2500 words and required a lot of research. I had to submit this on Friday so I physically couldn't start working until Thursday evening, because that's when the pressure is the highest, and that's the only thing that makes me work.
Is there anything I can do to fix this extreme procrastination and lack of motivation and concentration? I want to be deciplined but the methods I have tried so far didn't work. Any advice would be appreciated.
... Read moreExtreme procrastination is a common challenge for many students, impacting both their academic performance and mental health. The pressure of completing work at the last minute can create a cycle of stress and avoidance. To combat this, it's crucial to develop a structured routine.
Start by breaking tasks into smaller, more manageable steps. For instance, if you have a large assignment due, create a timeline that includes specific milestones for research, outlining, and writing. This approach minimizes overwhelm and helps you build momentum.
Additionally, consider the Pomodoro Technique, which involves working in short bursts followed by small breaks. This method can improve focus and reduce the feeling of burnout by allowing for regular recovery time. Another effective strategy is to create a dedicated workspace, free from distractions like your phone or social media. Setting clear boundaries regarding work hours can also enhance your productivity.
Lastly, don't hesitate to seek support from peers or mentors. Sometimes, simply discussing your struggles can provide motivation and accountability. Remember, it's essential to be patient with yourself as you learn to manage procrastination effectively—progress takes time, and every small step counts.
